Job Description
Under the direct supervision of the Shelter Operations Manager and Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT), the Veterinary Technician provides medical and supportive care to animals in the care of Friends of Upland Animal Shelter.
The Veterinary Technician is to perform all duties related to caring for animals; assess the health and behavior of animals; clean and disinfect work station/medical room; and maintain medical records in Shelterluv; caring for all animals related to duties as assigned.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned:
Observe animals in shelter for signs of illness or injury and reports to manager
Observe sick, quarantined, and potentially injured animals. Notify supervision of animals in need of veterinary care or euthanasia.
Assess the health and behavior of animals and coordinate with other shelter staff and medical professionals to assess and treat animals, as needed.
Maintain a variety of records including animal health records and records on the neutering, surgery, vaccinations, and other medical procedures.
Provide food & water for all animals under medical care (if not already done)
Clean & disinfect animal enclosures in which working
Order and maintain medical supplies needed at the shelter
The ability to follow direction without supervision
Euthanasia of animals
Be able to recognize symptoms of common diseases of dogs and cats
Collecting and testing of Lab samples
Administering shots, medications or treatments
Cutting nails
Transporting animals to authorized veterinary practices for additional medical treatment
Must obtain approval for all offsite medical procedures
Create spreadsheets for vaccines and frontline
And all other assigned duties
Minimum Experience and Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Two (2) years of experience working as a veterinary technician in an animal shelter, veterinary hospital or other animal care facility. Two (2) years of experience working with domestic animals in an animal shelter, veterinary hospital or other animal care facility is preferred. One (1) year supervisory experience is preferred. Bilingual in English/Spanish a plus.
May be required to pass background check, physical examination, and drug screening.
Must maintain a California Class C driver’s license with a good driving record.
Education:
High School Graduate or GED
Veterinary Technician’s Certification or Related more advanced veterinary certification or license
Language Ability:
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
Math Ability:
Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

The employee is frequently required to lift, restrain, vaccinate and move animals and other items weighing up to 70 pounds.
