Position Overview

__________________________________________________________________________________

The Product Stewardship & SDS Specialist is responsible for the creation, maintenance, revision, and regulatory compliance of Safety Data Sheets (SDSs), product labels, and related hazard communication documentation for aerosol products and liquid chemical mixtures. This position supports product development, regulatory compliance, customer requirements, and market access activities by evaluating product formulations, hazard classifications, transportation classifications, chemical inventory status, VOC compliance, and applicable regulatory obligations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

SDS Authoring and Hazard Communication

  • Create, review, edit, and maintain Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) and product labels for aerosol products and liquid chemical mixtures.
  • Perform routine SDS reviews and revisions resulting from formulation changes, supplier updates, regulatory changes, or hazard reclassifications.
  • Develop and maintain compliant hazard communication documentation for domestic and international markets.
  • Ensure accuracy and consistency of physical, health, environmental, toxicological, transportation, and regulatory information.
  • Coordinate and review SDS and label translations, primarily Spanish & Canadian French.

Hazard Classification and Regulatory Compliance

  • Conduct hazard classifications and hazard determinations for chemical mixtures in accordance with Globally Harmonized System (GHS) classification requirements.
  • Determine appropriate hazard statements, precautionary statements, signal words, pictograms, and label elements.
  • Classify aerosol products, flammable liquids, corrosives, and other regulated products.
  • Maintain compliance with applicable OSHA HazCom 2024, Canada WHMIS 2022, and other applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Monitor regulatory developments and implement documentation updates as required.

Transportation Classification (SDS Section 14)

  • Develop and maintain SDS Section 14 transportation information.
  • Determine transportation classifications for hazardous materials and dangerous goods under [U.S. DOT (49 CFR), Transport Canada TDG, IMDG Code, IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations].
  • Assign and document UN/NA numbers, Proper Shipping Names, Hazard Classes and Divisions, Packing Groups, Marine Pollutant designations, Limited Quantity and Excepted Quantity eligibility, and applicable Special Provisions.
  • Support domestic and international shipping compliance activities and maintain supporting classification documentation.

Product Stewardship and Compliance Support

  • Verify and maintain chemical inventory status for domestic and international markets.
  • Conduct VOC calculations & compliance evaluations for aerosol and liquid formulations.
  • Support customer, sales, and product development inquiries regarding product compliance, SDSs and labels.
  • Assist with customer questionnaires, audits, regulatory inspections, and product stewardship initiatives.
  • Maintain records supporting hazard, transportation, and regulatory determinations.

Data Management and Systems Support

  • Utilize SDS authoring software to create and manage regulatory documentation.
  • Leverage productivity tools, automation technologies, and artificial intelligence (AI) applications to improve efficiency in data analysis, document preparation, information retrieval, and workflow management.
  • Evaluate AI-generated content and recommendations for technical accuracy, completeness, and regulatory compliance.
  • Maintain product and regulatory data within SDS management systems and databases.
  • Analyze and organize compliance-related data using Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables and reporting tools.
  • Interface with ERP systems to obtain formulation, raw material, packaging, and product information.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with R&D, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, Sales, Marketing, Customer Service, and Operations teams.
  • Communicate technical and regulatory information effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Support internal and external customers with timely, accurate, and professional responses.

Required Education and Experience

__________________________________________________________________________________

  • Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, Toxicology, Occupational Health, Biology, Regulatory Affairs, Quality, EHS, or a related discipline; equivalent experience may be considered.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, and assume ownership of assigned responsibilities.
  • Working with technical, regulatory, quality, environmental, or compliance.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including data analysis and pivot tables.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across multiple functional areas and build productive working relationships.
  • Experience using AI-enabled productivity tools, data analysis platforms, or document management systems in a technical, regulatory, scientific, quality, or compliance environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate and validate information generated through AI-assisted tools while maintaining regulatory and technical accuracy.
  • Aptitude in leveraging emerging technologies to improve efficiency, data quality, and regulatory compliance processes.

Physical Requirement

__________________________________________________________________________________

Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. The ability to view and analyze data on computer screens for extended periods. Occasional standing, walking, or moving within an office environment. Occasionally lift or move light office items (typically up to 10–15 pounds), such as laptops or files.
