Description:

About Us:

Burloak Technologies is a leader in the additive manufacturing industry and provides engineering services for additive manufacturing, materials development, high precision CNC machining and metrology. Burloak Technologies works with the most innovative companies in the space, aerospace, automotive and industrial markets to rapidly transition their most challenging part designs to be additively manufactured at scale.

Position Summary:

The CNC Machinist II is responsible for independently setting up, operating, and troubleshooting 3-axis and 5-axis CNC milling machines and CNC lathes to manufacture precision components that meet engineering specifications and AS9100 quality standards. This role performs complete machine setups, verifies part quality through in-process inspections, interprets engineering drawings and GD&T requirements, and resolves machining issues to ensure efficient production and consistent quality. Working closely with CNC Programmers, Engineering, Quality, and Production teams, the CNC Machinist II supports continuous improvement initiatives, mentors less experienced machinists, and contributes to a safe, collaborative, and high-performance manufacturing environment. This position plays a key role in producing complex components for the aerospace, space, automotive, and industrial sectors while demonstrating technical expertise, accountability, and a commitment to operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

Machining and Technical Operations

  • Independently set up and operate 3-axis and 5-axis CNC milling machines and CNC lathes, including fixturing, tooling selection, coordinate setting, offset management, and probing routines.
  • Review setup sheets, work instructions, engineering drawings, and CNC programs prior to machining, identifying and resolving discrepancies before production begins.
  • Troubleshoot machining issues including toolpath deviations, offset errors, dimensional non-conformances, and surface finish concerns, implementing corrective actions as required.
  • Interpret blueprints and GD&T requirements to ensure machining accuracy and compliance with engineering specifications.
  • Perform in-process inspections using probing cycles, precision measuring instruments, and metrology equipment to verify part quality throughout production.

Equipment Upkeep and Maintenance Support

  • Perform routine machine maintenance, including coolant management, chip removal, lubrication, and general housekeeping to maximize equipment performance and uptime.
  • Identify and communicate machine performance concerns, supporting preventive maintenance and troubleshooting activities.
  • Maintain tooling libraries, preset records, and fixture organization to ensure efficient and repeatable machine setups.

Quality and Process Discipline

  • Follow AS9100 requirements, company procedures, and work instructions while completing all production and inspection documentation accurately.
  • Apply measurement verification and probing techniques throughout the machining process to prevent non-conforming product.
  • Collaborate with Quality and Engineering to investigate non-conformances, support root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions.

Team Support and Mentorship

  • Support and mentor less experienced machinists by sharing best practices for machine setup, inspection techniques, and equipment care.
  • Assist with onboarding and training new team members to promote consistent machining standards and safe work practices.
  • Work closely with CNC Programmers, Engineering, Quality, and Production Planning to resolve technical issues and improve manufacturing processes.

Professional Attributes and Team Contribution

  • Take ownership of assigned work from setup through final inspection, ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and high-quality workmanship.
  • Communicate technical concerns, production risks, and quality issues proactively to minimize disruptions and maintain production flow.
  • Demonstrate sound problem-solving skills while continuously expanding technical expertise in advanced machining, materials, and manufacturing processes.
  • Contribute to a culture of safety, accountability, continuous improvement, and operational excellence.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned in support of departmental and organizational objectives.
Requirements:

Technical Skills & Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of CNC machining experience, with demonstrated ability to independently set up, operate, and troubleshoot 3-axis and 5-axis CNC milling machines and CNC lathes.
  • Proven proficiency in workholding setup, tooling selection, coordinate setting, offset management, and probing routines with minimal supervision.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, G-code, and GD&T requirements for precision-machined components.
  • Proficient in in-process inspection and the use of precision measurement equipment, including micrometers, bore gauges, height gauges, and surface plates.
  • Experience operating FANUC-controlled machining centres and lathes, including making program adjustments and troubleshooting machining issues.
  • Experience with Wire EDM or Sink EDM equipment is considered an asset.
  • Exposure to CNC programming for milling or turning is considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated commitment to workplace safety, including identifying hazards, following safe work practices, and promoting a safe manufacturing environment.
  • Strong understanding of quality standards, manufacturing procedures, and documentation requirements, with the ability to consistently produce work that meets specification.
Industry & Material Knowledge
  • Experience in aerospace or other high-precision manufacturing environments such as medical, defense, or advanced manufacturing is preferred.
  • Familiarity with AS9100 quality management systems and documentation requirements.
  • Experience machining high-performance materials such as titanium, Inconel, stainless steel, and aerospace-grade aluminum alloys.
Education and Professional Attributes
  • College diploma or certificate in Machining, Precision Manufacturing, or a related skilled trade is considered an asset. Red Seal Certification is highly valued. Equivalent hands-on experience demonstrating advanced machining capability will also be considered.
  • Demonstrates strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to independently diagnose machining issues and implement effective solutions.
  • Effectively manages time and priorities while maintaining quality and productivity in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Communicates clearly and collaborates effectively with Production, Engineering, Quality, and Programming teams.
  • Demonstrates exceptional attention to detail, technical aptitude, and a commitment to producing high-quality work safely and efficiently.
  • Takes ownership of assigned responsibilities, contributes positively to the team, and actively supports continuous improvement and knowledge sharing across the machining department.
