Job Description
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an Underwater Acoustics Senior Consultant based in Canada.
This senior-level role sits at the intersection of marine science, environmental consulting, and advanced acoustic modelling, supporting projects that shape responsible coastal and offshore development.
You will lead underwater noise assessments that inform environmental approvals, regulatory compliance, and marine protection strategies across complex infrastructure projects.
Working within a globally connected technical team, you will translate acoustic data into robust predictions, actionable insights, and defensible technical reports.
The role involves both hands-on modelling and strategic advisory work, combining scientific rigor with practical environmental decision-making.
You will collaborate closely with engineers, marine biologists, regulators, and clients to design mitigation and monitoring approaches that reduce ecological impact.
It offers exposure to high-profile projects in offshore energy, ports, dredging, and marine infrastructure across Canada and beyond.
This is a leadership-oriented consulting role where technical depth, communication skills, and innovation in underwater acoustics are equally valued.
- Lead and support underwater acoustics assessments, including sound propagation modelling, exposure analysis, and technical advisory for offshore and coastal infrastructure projects.
- Develop and execute acoustic models for continuous and impulsive noise sources, ensuring robust assumptions, sensitivity analysis, and uncertainty evaluation.
- Conduct source characterization by reviewing measurement datasets, scientific literature, and equipment specifications to define accurate model inputs.
- Process, analyze, and interpret underwater acoustic data, including spectral and time-series datasets, ensuring rigorous QA/QC and validation.
- Contribute to environmental assessments, permitting processes, and regulatory submissions, including stakeholder and expert technical responses.
- Design and support underwater noise monitoring programs, including instrumentation planning, field coordination, and data deliverables.
- Prepare high-quality technical reports, figures, and presentations suitable for regulatory review, peer scrutiny, and client decision-making.
- Mentor junior team members, improve modelling workflows, and support standardization of technical tools and reporting frameworks.
- Collaborate on business development activities, including proposals, client engagement, and development of service offerings in underwater acoustics.
- 5+ years of experience in underwater acoustics, environmental consulting, or marine impact assessment, particularly within offshore or coastal projects.
- Degree in engineering, physics, acoustics, ocean engineering, marine science, or a related discipline (Master’s preferred).
- Professional designation or eligibility for registration (e.g., P.Eng. in Canada, PE in the US, or equivalent).
- Strong understanding of underwater acoustics principles, including propagation physics, frequency analysis, and source characterization methods.
- Knowledge of marine fauna sensitivity to sound, including behavioral disturbance, masking, and ecological impact frameworks.
- Experience applying environmental impact assessment criteria for marine mammals, fish, and other relevant species.
- Proficiency with technical tools such as Python and/or MATLAB, GIS (an asset), and Microsoft 365 applications.
- Experience with acoustic modelling tools, including sensitivity testing, reproducible workflows, and defensible assumptions.
- Familiarity with marine acoustic monitoring programs, including planning, execution oversight, and data interpretation.
- Ability to produce clear, structured technical documentation suitable for regulatory and peer-reviewed contexts.
- Experience developing mitigation and adaptive management strategies based on acoustic modelling outputs.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to translate complex technical concepts for multidisciplinary and non-technical audiences.
- Proven ability to work in client-facing roles, including proposal development and solution shaping.
- Leadership, mentoring, and collaboration experience within multidisciplinary marine or environmental teams.
- Highly organized, adaptable, and comfortable working across multiple projects and time zones in a remote or hybrid environment.
- Competitive compensation package with salary range typically aligned to experience and location (approx. CAD $85,000–$100,000).
- Comprehensive health coverage including medical, dental, and vision benefits.
- Full-time permanent role with long-term career growth opportunities in a global consulting environment.
- Flexible work arrangements, including remote work options across Canada and project-based travel opportunities.
- Access to continuous learning, technical development, and leadership growth programs.
- Participation in high-impact environmental and sustainability projects with global reach.
- Collaborative, multidisciplinary work culture with strong emphasis on innovation and knowledge sharing.
