Responsible for determining the origin and cause of fires, collecting evidence, and preparing detailed reports to

support legal proceedings including but not limited to:



  • Conduct methodical scene examinations by excavating and reconstructing the area to identify a fire’s point of origin and ignition source.
  • Collect, preserve, and document all physical evidence, maintaining a strict chain of custody for items sent for laboratory analysis.
  • Interview firefighters, property owners, and witnesses to gather information and establish a timeline of the incident.
  • Prepare detailed investigative reports that outline the methodology, findings, and professional conclusions on the fire’s cause.
  • Provide expert testimony in legal proceedings, presenting objective findings to be used in criminal or civil court cases.
  • Analyze the application of fire codes, building construction, and systems performance in relation to the incident.
  • Coordinate investigative efforts with law enforcement, insurance companies, and other agencies to ensure a thorough and collaborative process.
  • Maintain current knowledge of fire science, investigative techniques, and technology to ensure proficiency.

A qualified candidate will possess the requisite knowledge and education required by NFPA 1033 and possess at minimum a current NAFI-CFEI Certification and be able to obtain the IAAI-CFI Certification within one year of employment.


The pay range for this role is:
50 - 60 USD per hour(St. Louis, MO)
