The University of New Mexico Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Genetics, is seeking a full time Genetic Counselor to join the genetics team. The Division provides the full range of genetic services to children and adults, conducting genetics and metabolic clinics in Albuquerque and at outreach clinics throughout New Mexico. The division performs inpatient consults at UNM Children's Hospital. UNM's Division of Pediatric Genetics is committed to providing the children of New Mexico with comprehensive genetic healthcare that is unequaled in the state and region.

By the start date of employment, the successful candidate must have a Master's degree in Genetic Counseling (or equivalent thereof) from an accredited program, board eligibility or certification by the American Board of Genetic Counseling and must be eligible and apply for licensure in Genetic Counseling in the State of New Mexico.

The Genetic Counselor position consists of the following responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with geneticists in Genetics Clinics: collect clinical information, obtain family histories, and document information and assessment in the medical record
  • Conduct independent genetic counseling clinics
  • Assist patients and families to understand genetic testing results, diagnoses, expected clinical course, recurrence risks, follow-up recommendations, and adjustment to the disorder
  • Assist families to access available resources within the community and nationwide for support and information pertinent to the child's genetic diagnosis
  • Develop educational materials and give presentations to related programs as appropriate
  • Participate in teaching of interns, residents, medical students, genetic counseling students, and other learners
  • Perform administrative duties related to evaluation and management of patients referred to the program
  • Travel to outreach clinic sites with geneticist 1-2 times per month to complete genetics clinics hosted by Children's Medical Services
  • Collaborate with the state newborn screening program

  • Must maintain certification and/or licensure status.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
  • Successful candidate must submit to a post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check. Additional health screenings may be required, dependent on the nature of the research conducted, as determined by Employee Occupational Health Services.

  • Strong communication and teaching skills, with the ability to educate patients, families, and healthcare trainees (interns, residents, students) and develop educational materials or presentations.
