About The Organization:
Created in 2008 and privately held, Harmac Pacific Pulp operates a Northern Bleached Softwood Kraft pulp mill on the East coast of Vancouver Island near Nanaimo, BC. Nanaimo Forest Products (NFP) Ltd., the owner of the Harmac Pacific trademark, restarted the mill with a single production line on October 3, 2008. Since that time the mill has grown to two production lines and a capacity of 400,000 tonnes of world-class pulp per year. Key to Harmac’s success is the employee ownership model. Our employees are very active participants in the running of the business and have 2 members that they appoint to the company’s 6 seats on its Board of Directors.
The future of Harmac Pacific Pulp is looking bright. Through extensive capital investments, the organization has made significant improvements to productivity and reliability. In addition, as of 2013, the installation has been complete of a 25 MW Green Energy turbogenerator which we currently use to sell power to BC Hydro.

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Production Relief Supervisor to join our team at Harmac Pacific Pulp Mill. Under the direction of the Production Superintendent, you will be responsible for providing relief for the Production Supervisors on the four operating shifts and working on projects to support the objectives of the Production Department. As opportunities become available, the Production Supervisor (Relief) may be required to take a full-time Shift Production Supervisor position.

Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure a high standard for compliance of employees to safe work practices and legislated safety regulations and the safe operation and condition of equipment.
- Direct the activities of the Fibre Handling, Digesters, Washers, Recaust/Kilns, Bleach Plants, and Machine Room on the assigned shift.
- Coordinate chip supply to the operation including; scow and truck unloading, chip pile reclaim, and chip stockpiling.
- Coordinate maintenance activities on the off-shifts.
- Communicate production requirements for grades and quality to be produced to key subordinates in the operating department and coordinate scheduled changes to the production program.
- Coordinate the activities in the Pulp Mill with the Steam Plant.
- Identify problems affecting the volume and quality of production by monitoring the various control and reporting systems in the plant, initiate corrective action when required.
- Maintain records of production activities in the shift log.
- Provide general supervision to shipping when Shipping supervision is not on the mill site.
- Provide supervision and assist in development and training of new and/or young workers including cleanup crews.
- Organize and carryout the scheduling and allocation of shift crews to maximize the efficiency of the crew and minimize costs.
- Ensure proper orientation and training for all crew members under your direction and maintained records of employee qualifications.
- Maintain high standards for your crew in the areas of safety, housekeeping, and compliance with operating procedures.
- Record and maintain time keeping records for employees under your direction in accordance with the provisions of the Labour Agreement.
- Deal with complaints and grievances brought forward by members of the crew in a fair and consistent manner guided by the Labour Agreement and Mill Policies.
- Identify opportunities to improve the effectiveness of the operation and make recommendations to the Production Superintendent and Area Production Supervisors.
- Carry out projects and administrative activities to support the objectives set out by the Production Department.
- A strong background in Pulp manufacturing and/or Maintenance of Pulp process equipment.
- Demonstrated supervisory skills and leadership abilities.
- A demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with people to achieve results.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with experience in developing job procedures and training systems.
- Working knowledge of desktop computer software applications including Microsoft office.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment
- Must be able to demonstrate initiative and deal with multiple demands.
