Job Description
Description:
The SMT Operator is responsible for operating, monitoring, and performing basic maintenance on surface mount technology (SMT) production equipment used in assembling printed circuit board assemblies (PCBAs). This role ensures accurate component placement, solder paste application, and overall product quality by following work instructions, engineering specifications, and company quality standards.
- Operate SMT equipment, including stencil printers, solder paste inspection, pick-and-place machines, reflow ovens.
- Perform machine setups, program loading, and line changeovers.
- Load feeders, verify component part numbers, and ensure proper material availability.
- Inspect product for solder defects, component alignment, polarity, and overall workmanship.
- Monitor equipment performance, identify issues, and perform basic troubleshooting.
- Complete required production documentation and maintain accurate traceability records.
- Follow ESD procedures, safety protocols, and quality guidelines such as IPC-A-610.
- Communicate production or quality issues promptly to engineering, quality, or supervision.
- Assist in routine equipment cleaning and preventative maintenance activities.
- High school diploma or GED required
- Experience in electronics manufacturing or SMT assembly preferred (1–2 years).
- Understanding of basic PCB assembly processes and surface mount components.
- Ability to read and interpret assembly drawings, work instructions, and part labels.
- Basic computer skills and ability to navigate manufacturing software.
- Competence using measurement/inspection tools (microscope, calipers, AOI interface).
- Strong attention to detail and quality-focused mindset.
- Good communication skills within a team environment.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced production environment with minimal supervision.
- Dependable, punctual, and capable of managing priorities.
- Knowledge of IPC-A-610 Class 2 or Class 3 workmanship standards.
- Prior work in high-reliability, aerospace, or defense PCBA environments.
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
- Ability to lift up to 30 lbs.
- Good manual dexterity for handling small components
- Manufacturing floor with exposure to machinery, soldering processes, chemical fumes, and ESD-controlled areas.
- Must follow all site safety rules and maintain ESD compliance.
- Use required PPE when handling chemicals or performing specific tasks.
