Position Summary The WPPA Nurse Practitioner is responsible for providing primary care services, including assessing, diagnosing, prescribing, treating and educating patients. Works closely with physicians and other clinicians in a team approach to patient care. May specialize in a specific type of clinical care, e.g. pediatrics, geriatrics.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities Includes the Following: 1. Understands and adheres to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors. 2. Conducts patient rounds as necessary. Formulates and implements a therapeutic plan of care with physicians and staff. Writes in progress notes. 3. Assesses daily plan of care and recommends actions in collaboration with the patient’s physician. 4. Orders and interprets appropriate laboratory and diagnostic testing. Maintains contact with the ancillary testing areas for follow up. 5. Performs regular medication reviews for patients and modifies orders as necessary. 6. Recommends appropriate consults as needed. 7. Communicates with patient/family regarding plan of care and discharge plan. 8. Interacts with third party insurers regarding plan of care and continued stay. 9. Participates as needed in finalizing a safe discharge plan. Completes all required documentation. 10. Assists staff in moving patient along clinical pathway. 11. Serves as a resource to the discharge planning staff. 12. Inpatient rounding – assist physicians with pre-op and post-op patient assessments. 13. Assist physicians as requested with appropriate surgical procedures. 14. Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Education & Experience Requirements Master’s degree in nursing from an accredited school. Current NYS license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse. Current NYS certification as a Nurse Practitioner (either Adult/Geriatric). Maintains a current collaborative practice agreement. BCLS certification required. ACLS certification required as of 6/1/21 for NPs/PAs in Center for Advanced Medicine & Surgery (CAMS) & Cancer Center Minimum two years’ experience in an acute care setting.

Physical/Mental Demands/Requirements & Work Environment • Ability to perform computer work for extensive periods of time • Occasionally move and/or transport of 15 to 20 pounds • Requires movement about the department frequently throughout the day • Ability to remain in stationary position for extended periods of time • Ability to respond to frequent phone calls • May be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks. Any hazardous chemicals the employee may be exposed to are listed in the hospital’s SDS (Safety Data Sheet) data base and may be accessed through the hospital’s Intranet site (Employee Tools/SDS Access). A copy of the SDS data base can also be found at the hospital switchboard, saved on a disc.
