Deputy Sheriff's are required to engage in the pursuit, apprehension, and arrest of law violators or suspected law violators, if observed or when assistance is requested from dispatch or other deputy sheriffs. The incumbent in this position is responsible for the protection of life and property and the enforcement of laws and regulations. This work requires the ability to effectively use computer systems and electronic equipment; and entails frequent contact with the public under routine and emergency conditions. The duties and tasks listed below are not intended to be all-inclusive. Those assigned to specialized units may have additional responsibilities and/or qualifications; refer to written directives for details. The employer reserves the right to assign additional duties and responsibilities for this position as necessary.

• Conducts policing activities in assigned areas to preserve public peace, discovers and prevents the commission of crimes; enforces criminal laws and ordinances; protects property and preserves life; maintains awareness of criminal activity and dangerous persons; issues warnings and citations; apprehends persons with probable cause.
• Responds to calls for the protection of life and property, which includes emergency responses to quiet and suppress all affrays, riots and insurrections; use of deadly or non-deadly force; use sound judgment under adverse, stressful conditions.
• Investigates criminal complaints; identifies, collects, preserves, processes, and books evidence; locates and interviews victims and witnesses; identifies and interrogates suspects.
• Works in partnership with the District Attorney’s Office to obtain, file, and serve criminal complaints and warrants for crimes committed under state laws and local ordinances.
• Controls and manages people under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or other potentially hostile situations.
• Establishes and preserves good public relationships; answers general questions concerning local and state laws, procedures, and activities of the agency; make public presentations to promote crime prevention activities and enhance public understanding of law enforcement activities.
• Assists other law enforcement agencies in matters relating to the apprehension of offenders and the investigation of offenses; may be required to respond to law enforcement related mutual aid assistance requests in areas outside of the county.
• Participates in continuous and assigned training to maintain and/or enhance law enforcement skills to satisfy State and agency requirements.
• Contacts, interviews, and interrogates victims, complainants, witnesses, suspects, and others involved in cases and incidents; obtain statements, documents factual and physical evidence.
• Initiates, prepares, and completes a variety of reports and other required legal documents; recommends case disposition with designated agency.
• Directs traffic movement at special events and during emergency situations under varied environmental extremes; remains at work during stipulated time periods or responds to incidents that may require additional resources at the scene of the critical law enforcement incidents; assists and provides appropriate first aid.

• Good work history
• Accredited high school or GED diploma
• Must be able to comprehend and communicate fluently in verbal and written English
• At least 20 years of age
• U.S. Citizen
• Valid driver's license for the last year
• Must not have been convicted of a felony
• Must not have been convicted of a misdemeanor involving moral character, false statements, perjury or domestic violence
• Must not have received a dishonorable discharge from the United States Armed Forces
• No illegal drug usage within the last year. Other drug usage will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis
• Must be in good physical condition

Phsyical Requirements

• Cardiovascular strength and stamina including the ability to chase subjects on foot through various terrains (i.e. up/down stairs, around buildings, on city streets, through or in between natural barriers such as water, trees, bushes, etc., or a combination of these, etc.)
• Must be able to engage in violent and physical confrontations including physical fighting with subjects and/or re-directing them to the ground.
• Must be able to physically secure a resisting subject with the appropriate restraints after a physical confrontation.
• Visual depth, distance, and color perception, night and peripheral vision.
• Must be able to meet the agency's hearing standard established by the agency's Occupational Medical Physicians.
• Must meet visual requirements of at least correctable to 20/40 in each eye.
• Must be able to use both hands simultaneously and have manual and finger dexterity.
• Flexibility of upper body and limbs and ability to reach with hands and arms.
• Strength in upper and lower body, legs, back, arms, and hands.
• Must be able to wear a utility equipment belt capable of carrying multiple pieces of required equipment for extended periods of time (on average, weighing approximately 20 pounds).
• Coordination in legs, arms, hands, eye-hand; steadiness of hand/arm.
• Physical speed; quick reflexes; balance/equilibrium; able to stand for long periods of time.
• Ability to run, jump, climb, walk, sit, bend/lean over, twist/turn, and maneuver into and out of small spaces and vehicles. Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl.
• Ability to operate a motor vehicle safely and appropriately.
• Ability to coordinate rhythm of compression and breaths during CPR.
• Ability to accept acute pain.
