About This Position

Under general supervision, the Lead Public Safety Officer performs lead-level duties in support of public safety operations, including emergency response, community engagement, and the enforcement of public safety protocols and procedures. Coordinates, organizes, and assists with the assignments of public safety personnel; oversees daily field operations to ensure the safety and security of residents, visitors, and city property. Provides direct support in critical incidents, prepares detailed incident and activity reports, assists with training and onboarding, and ensures compliance with local, state, and federal safety regulations.

- Leads and coordinates daily activities of patrol staff, assists with scheduling, prioritizing assignments, monitoring performances, providing on-site direction during shifts, and ensuring timely completion of assignments.
- Reviews staff activity, statistical reports, daily worksheets, monthly productivity logs, and other related documentation to ensure accuracy and completeness.
- Provides training of new and existing staff in both field and office settings on department policies, safety procedures, emergency response protocols, and legal compliance.
- Provides field support to the Sheriff’s Department by responding to dispatched calls for non-emergency service. Responds to critical incidents such as accidents, disturbances, or natural disasters; assists with on-scene coordination and supports emergency personnel as directed. Oversees patrol operations in residential, commercial, and public areas by vehicle or on foot, ensures effective area coverage and public visibility.
- Assist with reviewing and monitoring parking enforcement activities, including the issuance of citations, red-tagging of vehicles, and coordination of vehicle removal and impoundment.
- Provides oversight and guidance in the investigation of traffic accidents, including review of accident reports and coordination of traffic control efforts.
- Responds to public inquiries and requests for assistance, including homeless individuals, stranded motorists etc. Evaluates the situation, conducts assessments, provides information and resources on available services, coordinates with appropriate City Departments or other agencies.
- Monitors City facilities, parks and public spaces during public and special events, and enforces rules and regulations.
- Responds to complex public inquiries and service requests, assisting field personnel as needed and ensuring consistent and professional delivery of information and services.
- Oversees the maintenance of public safety equipment and vehicles; identifies malfunctions and coordinates necessary repairs or service.
- Supports public safety education and outreach by participating in programs such as Neighborhood Watch, Business Watch, and other community events. Builds positive relationships with the public by providing information, support, and guidance to enhance public trust and cooperation.
- Prepares and reviews incident and activity reports; maintains accurate records related to personnel activities, incidents, and safety violations.
- Works closely with law enforcement, fire departments, emergency medical services, and other relevant agencies during joint operations or emergencies.
- Ensures compliance with applicable city, state, and federal laws, as well as departmental rules and regulations.
- Maintains the absolute confidentiality of all records and information.
- May assist with basic animal control support, as needed.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent GED.
AND
Three (3) years of experience as a public safety officer or community services officer, or three years of municipal public safety or law enforcement experience, primarily in the enforcement of public laws or guidelines, conducting public inspections or complaint investigations. Prior experience in a lead or supervisory capacity is highly desirable.
Required Licenses or Certifications:
- Must possess a valid California driver's license.
- Certified training in California Penal Code, Section 832 (PC-832) Laws of Arrest, is required within six (6) months of hire.
Ability to obtain security clearance (background check) as required by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
