Position Summary
We are seeking a licensed Substation Project Engineer to serve as a technical leader and Engineer of Record for complex substation design projects. This role combines hands-on engineering expertise with people leadership, technical authority, and project oversight.
In this position, you will lead the technical execution of physical substation projects from concept through construction support, ensure compliance with applicable codes and client standards, and mentor a team of engineers and designers. You will work closely with Project Managers and clients to deliver high-quality, compliant, and efficient engineering solutions.
This role is ideal for a seasoned substation engineer who enjoys ownership, technical leadership, mentoring others, and influencing project outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
Advanced technical and leadership role requiring strong design expertise, project execution experience, client interaction, and leadership/mentorship skills with minimal supervision.?
- Serve as the responsible engineer of record for substation projects on physical design.
- Review project documentation prior to client submittals.?
- Serve as the technical manager for projects, coordinating across disciplines and managing the execution of projects for success.?
- Mentor engineers and designers by reviewing work and providing technical guidance.?
- Provide construction support by addressing RFIs, change orders, and field conditions.?
- Manage design execution with budgets, schedules, estimates, and progress tracking.?
- Review proposals and participate in execution planning.?
- Own your team’s impact on the overall success of the project.?
- Manage low risk projects independently and medium to high risk under supervision.?
People Leadership & Team Development
- Lead and mentor a design team; provide coaching, feedback, and career development.?
- Facilitate team meetings, design reviews, and milestone check-ins to maintain alignment, accountability, and performance transparency.?
- Foster a collaborative, high-performance culture focused on technical excellence, delivery reliability, and continuous improvement.
Education/Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, or a related ABET-accredited engineering discipline (required)
- Professional Engineer (PE) license (required)
- 7+ years of overhead transmission line design experience
- Experience serving as Engineer of Record on utility transmission line projects
- Authorized to work permanently in the U.S. without sponsorship
Desired Skills & Attributes
- Advanced knowledge of overhead transmission line design principles and utility standards
- Strong working knowledge of NESC, RUS, and utility-specific requirements
- Advanced proficiency with PLS-CADD, SAG10, MFAD, AutoCAD, and related engineering tools
- Proven ability to lead complex technical design packages and coordinate across disciplines
- Demonstrated experience mentoring engineers and leading technical teams
- Ability to manage technical scope, budgets, and schedules across multiple projects
- High level of independence, accountability, and professional judgment
- Excellent communication, client-facing, and collaboration skills

At BHMG, our pay ranges are broad to allow for movement within our organization and to accommodate different skill sets and levels of expertise. The pay range for this position is $100,000.00 - $160,000.00 annual. This range encompasses multiple levels of the role. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the pay range. In addition, this position is eligible to earn additional compensation including annual incentive payments based on individual and company performance. Career level and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. We take into consideration a variety of factors including, but not limited to, skills, abilities, experience, education, credentials, and internal equity when determining the base salary offered.
