As Parks and Open Space Supervisor, you will be capable of:
Lead and Supervise Teams: Oversee, train, mentor, and evaluate maintenance staff to ensure high-quality parks and open space services.
Maintain Parks and Open Spaces: Ensure City parks, landscaped areas, irrigation systems, and open space areas are maintained to established standards.
Promote Safety and Training: Coordinate and provide training related to landscape maintenance, equipment operation, pesticide application, and safe work practices.
Oversee Contracts and Resources: Administer service contracts, inspect contractor work, and allocate staff, equipment, and materials efficiently.
Some of the essential duties you may be responsible for:
- Plan, prioritize, assign, mentor, supervise, and review the work of maintenance staff involved in the City’s parks and open space maintenance programs.
- Provide day-to-day leadership to support a high-performance, customer service-oriented work environment.
- Oversee crews performing mowing, trimming, pruning, irrigation repair, tree maintenance, weed abatement, and landscape installation.
- Inspect parks and open space areas to assess maintenance needs; schedule work and estimate labor, materials, and equipment requirements.
- Administer and inspect annual service contracts to ensure compliance with contract standards.
- Assist in preparing and monitoring departmental budgets, including forecasting staffing and material needs.
- Respond to public inquiries, complaints, and emergency situations as necessary.
- Supervise staff including hiring, training, evaluating performance, and addressing deficiencies.
- Prepare formal staff reports and memorandums to communicate project updates, recommendations, and operational impacts to City leadership.
- Respond to after-hours staff inquires.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional position details:- This position is part of the Chino Hills Supervisors' Association MOU.
- This role is classified as FLSA Exempt and not eligible for overtime. In lieu of overtime, the position is eligible to accrue up to forty (40) hours of administrative leave each calendar year.
- Eligible to receive Tuition Reimbursement up to $3,500 per fiscal year.
- 9/80 or 5/40 schedule.

A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
EXPERIENCE:
Four years of increasingly responsible experience in landscape maintenance work that includes one year of lead or supervisory experience.
Five years of experience in landscape maintenance that includes two years of supervisory experience is desirable.
EDUCATION:
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade, supplemented by specialized training or coursework in landscape maintenance or a related field.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION:
License or Certificate:
- Possession of a California Class C Driver’s License.
- Pest Control Adviser (PCA) and Qualified Applicator License (QAL) issued by the California Department of Pesticide Regulation. or
- Qualified Applicator Certificate (QAC) issued by the California Department of Pesticide Regulation.
- Playground Safety Inspector Certificate desired.

RECRUITMENT SCHEDULE
Qualified applicants will be invited to an oral interview/testing assessment, tentatively scheduled for the week of February 16, 2026.
The next phase of the process will be the department selection interview scheduled for week of February 23, 2026.
Prospective employees who are selected for employment must successfully complete a medical examination and background check, which is paid for by the City. The background check will include being LiveScan fingerprinted through the Department of Justice.
All original appointments who have never held active status in a classification will be required to serve a 26-pay period probationary period (approximately one year). If a current employee who has held active status is selected, it will be considered a promotional appointment, and they will be required to serve a 13-pay period probationary period (approximately six months).
