The Medical Technologist/Technician performs testing in various chemical, immunohematologic, hematologic, microscopic, and bacteriologic tests; to obtain data used in diagnosis and treatment of diseases. He/she assists with preventive maintenance.

For testing in high complexity the MLT must have at least three months documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing. At that time they may work under direction of the general supervisor, until they have been qualified as general supervisor (refer to general supervisor procedure).

JOB RELATIONSHIPS:

A. Responsible to: The Medical Technologist/Technician is responsible to the Laboratory Director, Technical Supervisor, Technical Consultant, and General Supervisor.

B. Workers Supervised: None

C. Interrelationships: The Medical Technologist/Technician works closely with the General Supervisor, Technical Supervisor, Technical Consultant, Employees, and Customers.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND AUTHORITIES:

A. Test analysis and specimen examinations.

1. Must have documented competency for each area of testing.

B. Specimen collection and processing.

1. Vein puncture

2. Skin Punctures

3. Swab collections (Strep, RSV, Flu, Throat)

4. Treatment of patient reactions

5. Proper labeling of tubes

6. Proper handling of specimens (storage, plasma, serum, timing).

C. Test performance for all tests

1. Follows procedures as outlined in manual and by manufacturer

2. Proper identification and handling of specimens

3. Quality Control requirements for each test

4. Proper documentation of quality control and patient records

5. Interpretation of tests

6. Troubleshooting for problems associated with each test.

D. Reporting of test results

1. Documentation of results in LIS

a. LIS security

b. Password policy and not using another person’s log in for testing or reporting

2. Verification of results before releasing to provider

3. Proper documentation of who performed the test

4. Release of results to the provider

E. Maintains records for patients, quality control, proficiency testing, and quality assurance.

F. Follow all laboratory procedures established by the laboratory.

G. Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results.

H. Troubleshoots testing problems and follows corrective actions or immediately notify the General Supervisor and/or Technical Supervisor.

I. Reports critical values according to policy.

1. Verification of results

2. Documentation of reporting critical values

3. Read back policy.

J. Job may require tech to be on call when needed.

QUALITY OF WORK:

A. Follows OSHA guidelines for safety, blood borne pathogens, and hazardous communications and completes yearly OSHA and compliance trainings in Relias.

B. Follows quality control and quality assurance procedures at all times.

C. Maintains professional integrity and confidentiality towards the patient, physician and physician staff, and fellow employees.

D. Documentation is in a clear, concise, legible, and understandable manner.

JOB KNOWLEDGE:

A. Maintains competency in all areas.

1. Maintain an in-depth knowledge of techniques, principles, and operations.

2. Demonstrate a thorough knowledge and understanding of policies and procedures in performing job duties.

3. Review laboratory policy and procedure manuals to remain current in the operating guidelines.

4. Pass annual competency evaluations in each job responsibility

Requirements:

A.A.S., B.S., or B.A. degree in medical technology or related field.

MT/MLT License / Certification / Registration by a National Certifying Agency

Student enrolled in MT/MLT program
