Job Description

Position: Chief of Staff

Department: Corporate

Status: Full-Time

Location: Boston Office

Salary Range: $175,000 - $185,000

Job Overview

The Chief of Staff (COS) reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and is a member of the Leadership Team. The COS is responsible for driving strategic initiatives and leading engagement with priority stakeholders. The COS assists the CEO in implementing the organization’s goals and strategic plan as approved by the Board of Directors. The COS is responsible for ensuring key initiatives progress to optimal outcomes in a timely manner. The COS will provide strategic and operational support to the CEO, enabling the CEO to fulfill internal and external duties and commitments, meet organizational goals, and work effectively with internal and external stakeholders. The COS should possess strong strategic thinking, project management, operational, and problem-solving skills to help support all aspects of the organization.

Job Duties:

  • Manage implementation of strategic initiatives in direct consultation with the CEO and Leadership Team
  • Support Government Affairs, Marketing and Communications and all other external affairs functions of the agency
  • Support Board of Directors relations
  • Support the planning and execution of committee meetings of the Board of Directors as required
  • Manage the Deputy Chief of Staff and the CEO’s Executive Assistant.
  • Support external engagements of the CEO, including ensuring the CEO is prepared for speaking engagements, coordinating preparation process with communications and relevant team members
  • Serve as an intermediary and key conduit for the flow of information to and from the non-executive staff of the organization and external stakeholders to the CEO
  • Proactively identify issues for the CEO and facilitate decisions by the CEO
  • Serve as a liaison between the organization, the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs, its constituent agencies and other key external state partners/agencies
  • Lead key projects and initiatives, both short- and long-term, as directed by the CEO
  • Perform additional tasks as may be assigned by the Chief Executive Officer

Job Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant field or equivalent experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • A minimum of 10 years’ experience in management positions of increasing responsibility
  • Demonstrated knowledge of government, public and media relations, including state political processes;
  • Demonstrated ability to work across multiple disciplines to achieve strategic goals
  • Demonstrated track record managing complex projects and proven ability to lead talented professionals to get results
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a variety of constituencies across community and political lines
  • Demonstrated ability to understand complex public and political issues related to the technology sector, economic development, workforce development, and clean energy
  • Proven leadership and strength in project management, organization, and analysis with exceptional accountability and proactiveness in dynamic setting
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a collaborative, team-oriented environment
  • Substantial management abilities with demonstrated skills in mentoring, professional development, motivating and team building
  • Excellent professionalism and diplomacy in representing an organization internally and externally, with significant skills in working productively and collaboratively with all levels of management and staff
  • Exceptional judgment, professionalism and discretion in handling confidential and sensitive situations and matters
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, presentation and negotiation skills
  • Excellent attention to detail, organizational and work-management skills
  • Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, shift priorities when necessary and meet deadlines.

Organization Overview

The Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) is a state economic development agency dedicated to accelerating the growth of the clean energy sector across the Commonwealth to spur job creation, deliver statewide environmental benefits and to secure long-term economic growth for the people of Massachusetts.

MassCEC currently funds about 20 programs, including financing for early-stage companies and technology development, pilots for the decarbonization of buildings and transportation, and investments in training to build a skilled, diverse clean energy workforce. MassCEC drives innovation by serving as a clearinghouse and support center for the clean energy technology sector -- helping companies and communities access capital and other vital growth resources. We also operate two major facilities that support the offshore wind industry.

MassCEC fosters collaboration among industry, state government, research universities and the financial sector to advance the state’s clean energy economy. We partner with policy-makers, employers, job seekers, students, municipal governments, community organizations, schools, industry experts, technology incubators, academics, business accelerators, energy consumers, clean energy installers, environmental advocates and the innovators who are developing the next generation of clean energy technologies.
