Job Description

About the Role:

The Hospice Inpatient Registered Nurse (RN) plays a critical role in providing compassionate, patient-centered care to individuals facing end-of-life challenges within an inpatient hospice setting. This position involves managing and coordinating comprehensive nursing care plans that address physical, emotional, and spiritual needs, ensuring comfort and dignity for patients during their final stages of life. The RN collaborates closely with interdisciplinary teams, including physicians, social workers, and chaplains, to deliver holistic care tailored to each patient's unique circumstances. Additionally, the nurse serves as a vital support system for patients' families, offering education, guidance, and emotional support throughout the hospice journey. Working a schedule of three 12-hour shifts from 7am to 7pm (including every 3rd weekend), the RN must maintain vigilance, clinical expertise, and empathy to uphold the highest standards of hospice care.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Current and valid Wisconsin Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice within the United States.
  • Minimum of one year of clinical nursing experience preferred, preferably in hospice, palliative care, or a related healthcare setting.

Responsibilities:

  • Assess and monitor patients' physical and emotional conditions regularly, adjusting care plans as needed to ensure optimal comfort and symptom management.
  • Administer medications and treatments in accordance with hospice protocols and physician orders, prioritizing pain relief and quality of life.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to develop and implement individualized care plans that address patients' holistic needs.
  • Provide education and emotional support to patients and their families, facilitating understanding of the hospice process and available resources.
  • Document all nursing interventions, patient responses, and communications accurately and timely in compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Respond promptly to changes in patient status, coordinating with medical staff to address urgent needs or emergencies.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and therapeutic environment that respects patient privacy and dignity.

Skills:

The Hospice Inpatient RN utilizes clinical assessment and critical thinking skills daily to evaluate patient conditions and implement appropriate interventions that alleviate pain and distress. Effective communication skills are essential for collaborating with interdisciplinary teams and providing clear, compassionate education and support to patients and families. Time management and organizational skills enable the nurse to prioritize care activities efficiently during long 12-hour shifts while maintaining meticulous documentation. Emotional resilience and empathy are vital to support patients and families through challenging end-of-life experiences. Additionally, proficiency with healthcare technology, including EMR systems, facilitates accurate record-keeping and coordination of care.
