Basic Functions and Scope of Responsibility
The Personal Trainer plays a key role in helping YMCA members achieve their health and wellness goals through expert guidance, personalized fitness programming, and ongoing motivation. This role supports a safe, encouraging environment while modeling the YMCA’s core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. Personal Trainers build strong relationships, deliver exceptional service, and contribute to the overall success of the wellness team.
Role Responsibilities
Conduct fitness assessments and wellness consultations to understand member goals, health history, and experience level
Design and deliver customized fitness programs including strength, cardio, flexibility, and functional training
Educate members on proper technique, equipment usage, and safe workout practices
Provide ongoing coaching, progress tracking, and support to encourage long-term member success
Promote YMCA wellness programs and personal training services to support member engagement
Ensure safety and cleanliness of the wellness center; respond to emergencies in line with YMCA protocols
Maintain accurate records of client sessions, assessments, and progress
Enforce YMCA policies and uphold behavior and safety standards
Attend required staff meetings, trainings, and continuing education sessions
Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of Wellness
Education, Experience & Training
Minimum age: 18
Current National Personal Training Certification required
CPR, AED and First Aid certification obtained within 30 days of employment
YMCA Foundations of Strength and Conditioning or equivalent preferred
Minimum one year of personal training or related wellness experience preferred
Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work with individuals of all fitness levels
Commitment to delivering high-quality, member-centered service in a team environment

Work Environment and Physical Demands
Visual, auditory, and verbal ability to communicate effectively.
Must have a high level of alertness, concentration, and initiative.
Ability to lift 50 lbs. and stand, walk, or sit for extended periods of time; occasionally stoop/bend.
Always maintain a neat and professional appearance.
