Job Description

The County of San Luis Obispo Public Health Department is currently recruiting for a full-time Public Health Nurse II in the Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program!

The Public Health Nurse (PHN) assigned to the Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program (CLPPP) provides comprehensive case management services to children with elevated blood lead levels identified through blood lead screening. The PHN plays a critical role in protecting children from the harmful effects of lead exposure by providing education, coordinating care, conducting home visits, and connecting families with appropriate resources.

Working collaboratively with an Environmental Health Specialist, the PHN assists in identifying potential sources of lead exposure and developing strategies to reduce environmental health risks. Responsibilities include conducting home visits as indicated, providing client and family education, coordinating referrals, documenting case management activities, and monitoring client progress.

The PHN also serves as a community resource by planning and participating in outreach activities, including educational presentations, health fairs, and community events that promote lead poisoning prevention and increase public awareness.

This position works closely with Public Health programs and a variety of community partners, including WIC, First 5, Community Action Partnership of San Luis Obispo (CAPSLO), Tri-Counties Regional Center (TCRC), pediatric healthcare providers, Field Nursing, Help Me Grow, Code Enforcement agencies, and Environmental Health to identify at-risk populations, strengthen community partnerships, and reduce childhood lead exposure throughout San Luis Obispo County.

This recruitment may be used to fill future permanent, substitute, limited term, and temporary positions, both full-time and part-time throughout the County.



The ideal candidate is a motivated and compassionate Public Health Nurse who is committed to improving the health and well-being of children and families. They will possess:

  • Experience in public health nursing or community-based nursing practice.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • The ability to work independently, exercise sound clinical judgment, and effectively manage multiple priorities.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Flexibility to accommodate community outreach activities, including occasional evenings and weekends.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience developing and delivering educational presentations to diverse audiences.
  • Experience building collaborative relationships with community partners and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Bilingual language skills are desirable, but not required

Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience

A combination of education, training, and experience resulting in the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. An example of qualifying education and experience includes:

Public Health Nurse II: Either A: Two years of experience as a Public Health Nurse I; OR B: Two years of public health related experience in a public or private health care setting.

Licenses and Certificates

Possession of a valid California license to practice as a Registered Nurse AND a California Public Health Nurse Certificate.

Possession of a valid California license to practice as a Registered Nurse is required at time of application and must be maintained throughout employment. A license in probationary status is a disqualification. Possession of a valid California Public Health Nurse Certificate is required. Possession of a valid driver's license may be required at the time of application. Possession of a valid CALIFORNIA driver's license may be required at the time of appointment and, if required, must be maintained throughout employment.
