Job Description
Blue Island Recycling, LLC is seeking a dependable and experienced Industrial Welder Mechanic to join our second shift maintenance team.
This is a hands on industrial position primarily focused on welding, fabrication, maintenance, and repair of our large industrial hammer mill and shredder used to process automobiles and other scrap metal.
The Industrial Welder Mechanic will perform heavy welding and fabrication repairs on the shredder and related processing equipment, assist with mechanical and hydraulic repairs, respond to equipment breakdowns, and perform maintenance and repair work throughout the facility.
Additional work may include maintenance and repairs involving conveyors, material processing equipment, and large mobile equipment such as excavators, material handlers, and wheel loaders.
We are looking for someone with strong professional welding and fabrication experience who is mechanically inclined, dependable, safety minded, and comfortable performing demanding hands on work in an active scrap metal recycling facility.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform welding and fabrication repairs on our industrial hammer mill and shredder and related equipment
Weld, cut, grind, fabricate, reinforce, and repair heavy steel components
Inspect shredder components and other equipment for worn, cracked, damaged, or broken parts requiring repair
Perform mechanical and hydraulic repairs on industrial equipment
Inspect, repair, and replace hydraulic hoses and other damaged or worn components
Assist with troubleshooting mechanical and hydraulic problems and responding to equipment breakdowns
Remove and replace worn or damaged mechanical components
Perform routine equipment inspections and assist with preventive maintenance
Perform welding, fabrication, maintenance, and repair work on conveyors and other material processing equipment
Assist with maintenance and repairs involving large mobile equipment such as excavators, material handlers, wheel loaders, and similar machinery
Safely operate welding equipment, cutting torches, grinders, hand tools, power tools, and other maintenance equipment
Drain oil, fuel, coolant, and other fluids from large trucks and vehicles being prepared for processing as needed
Properly collect, contain, and handle drained vehicle fluids
Maintain a clean and organized work area
Follow all company safety procedures, including lockout and tagout requirements
Assist with other maintenance and repair work throughout the facility as needed
Perform other duties as assigned by management
QUALIFICATIONS
Professional welding experience is required
Heavy fabrication, structural welding, or industrial welding experience is strongly preferred
Experience welding and repairing heavy steel or industrial equipment is strongly preferred
Mechanical repair, equipment repair, or industrial maintenance experience is strongly preferred
Experience performing mechanical and hydraulic repairs on heavy industrial equipment is preferred
Experience with hydraulic systems, hoses, cylinders, pumps, valves, and related components is preferred
Prior experience working as a welder or mechanic in a scrap metal yard, steel mill, quarry, demolition, mining, aggregate, heavy construction, recycling, or similar heavy industrial environment is strongly preferred
Experience maintaining or repairing large mobile heavy equipment such as excavators, material handlers, wheel loaders, dozers, or similar machinery is a plus
Ability to safely use welding equipment, cutting torches, grinders, hand tools, and power tools
Ability to perform mechanical troubleshooting and repairs
Must be comfortable working around large industrial machinery and heavy equipment
Must be dependable and able to reliably work the full scheduled shift
Must be able to work safely in an active industrial environment
Ability to speak Spanish is a plus but is not required
RELEVANT EXPERIENCE
Direct experience working on a scrap metal hammer mill or shredder is highly preferred but is not required.
Candidates with welding, fabrication, mechanical, or maintenance experience involving scrap metal shredders, hammer mills, crushers, conveyors, screening equipment, material processing equipment, heavy construction or demolition equipment, mining or aggregate equipment, recycling equipment, heavy trucks, industrial machinery, or other heavy steel fabrication and repair work are encouraged to apply.
Experience maintaining or repairing large mobile equipment such as excavators, material handlers, wheel loaders, and similar machinery is also valuable.
We are seeking candidates with actual hands on welding, fabrication, maintenance, or repair experience. Experience limited primarily to operating equipment does not replace the repair and maintenance experience preferred for this position.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position is located at an active scrap metal recycling and processing facility.
Employees work around heavy machinery, large mobile equipment, trucks, industrial equipment, scrap metal, dirt, dust, grease, noise, and changing weather conditions.
This is a hands on position. Applicants must be comfortable getting dirty, working around scrap metal and heavy equipment, working outdoors when required, and performing physical work in an industrial environment.
SCHEDULE
Monday through Friday
2:00 PM to 2:00 AM
Weekends off
This is a full time second shift position. Applicants must be able to reliably work the entire scheduled shift.
