Job Description
Purpose
Provides the practice and delivery of safe, effective, ethical and culturally competent emergency care to patients of all ages in emergency situations who require stabilization and/or resuscitation as a result of illness or injury. Key accountabilities include fostering interdisciplinary collaborative relationships; making decisions in patient care/triage; ensure smooth shift operations; facilitate a seamless transition for the next shift that includes exchange of essential information. Performs technical procedures according to Jackson County Regional Health Center Ambulance protocols and functions within their Scope of Practice in accordance with the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services, Bureau of EMS. In addition, assists in CS, Purchasing, Cardiopulmonary/Med Surg, ED or any other area of the hospital when asked/needed. EMTs also play an essential role in educating the community about health and safety practices and often assist in emergency preparedness and response planning.

- Operate ambulance equipment and respond to radio transmissions
- Lead and coordinate the team responding to an emergency
- Evaluate the patient’s condition on the scene and perform preliminary diagnosis
- Attend to injuries or sudden illnesses by applying a variety of pre-hospital simple and advanced treatments (first aid, CPR, administering injections and oxygen etc.) or surgical procedures
- Use tech equipment and tools to stabilize patients or provide immediate treatment
- Monitor patient’s condition en route to the hospital
- Collaborate with interested parties (police, firefighting unit, doctors etc.)
- Write and submit concrete and accurate reports on incidents
- Adhere to established medical protocols and procedures as well as legal guidelines and health and safety standards
- Keep abreast with new treatment and medical procedures through continuous training
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Competencies Basic Anatomy and Physiology Medical Terminology -- Familiarity with the language used in medical settings to describe conditions, treatments, and procedures. Emergency Care Protocols Pharmacology Basics - Awareness of medications commonly used in emergency situations (example epinephrine for allergic reactions). Emergency Care Techniques Driving Skills Read, write, and communicate professionally and effectively with employees and managers Effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to other employees and/or managers Knowledge of company protocols, operational procedures, and safety policies Knowledge of methods and techniques for providing on-site emergency medical services Supervisory Responsibility Guidance: The job requires the provision of OCCASIONAL guidance and training to others. The job does not have formal or official supervisory responsibilities. Materials Responsibility Very Limited. Work requires very limited responsibility for material resources. Examples of resources could include personal work materials, supplies or equipment, or very small amounts of cash. The employee has very limited or indirect amount of control over these resources. Although human error might require the repair or replacement of materials, usually the cost of correcting these errors is minor. The variety and volume of resources is also very limited. Problems associated with material resources are very uncomplicated. An EMT has several key responsibilities related to managing materials and equipment. Equipment Inspection Inventory Management including daily and monthly rig checks/outdates Sanitization and Decontamination Organizing and Storing Equipment Documentation and Reporting Vehicle Maintenance Routine Training on Equipment Use Key Relationships Co-workers/JCRHC Employees, Outside Agencies/ Other Health Care Providers, General Public/Visitors/Volunteers, Physicians/Medical Office Staff, Students/Interns/Residents/Outside Instructors. Patients, Families, and Significant Others, Vendors/Clients Position Specifications Education High School plus additional course work up to 1 year Field of Study Emergency Medical Services Special Training Basic Life Support; CPI and Dependent Adult/Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter Training within timelines established in the Licensure, Registration, Certification and Life Saving training policy. Training Preferred AHA BLS Child and Dependent Adult Courses NIMS training Licensure / Registration EMT in Iowa, Valid Driver’s License Class D AHA BLS Experience Less than 1 year required. Interpersonal Skills Interaction is with a variety of people inside or outside the organization. Communications are often difficult or stressful in nature. Contact with others involves complex, detailed and often sensitive topics. The job requires a high degree of interpersonal skills to deal with a range of complicated problem situations. Interactions involve gaining the agreement of others. Working Conditions: There is a routine exposure to highly adverse environmental conditions including physical hazards, health and safety risks, and otherwise undesirable characteristics in the environment. Personal risks require safety equipment or precautions to be followed closely. The time the employee is exposed to these conditions exceed 70% of their work day.
