Position Summary

The Superintendent is responsible for the safe, productive, timely, and cost-effective field execution of each assigned project, work area, or construction scope.

The Superintendent directly manages field operations and ensures employees understand the work plan, perform safely, charge time correctly, use materials and equipment responsibly, and complete work in accordance with the schedule, budget, drawings, specifications, and quality requirements.

The Superintendent must maintain control of project costs and understand how daily field decisions affect productivity, budget, non-billable cost, schedule, and contribution margin.

Essential Responsibilities

Field Execution

• Direct the daily execution of assigned work and understand the project scope, drawings, specifications, schedule, budget, and client expectations.
• Develop daily and weekly work plans and clearly communicate assignments and production expectations.
• Ensure crews have the information, materials, tools, equipment, access, and permits required to perform their work.
• Coordinate work between crafts, subcontractors, operations personnel, and client representatives.
• Identify field conflicts before they affect safety, quality, productivity, or schedule.
• Monitor actual progress against the plan and take corrective action when production falls behind.

Safety Leadership

• Be directly accountable for safe field execution.
• Ensure permits, job safety analyses, pre-task plans, toolbox meetings, inspections, and hazard controls are completed.
• Confirm employees understand the hazards and requirements of assigned work.
• Enforce company and client safety policies and exercise Stop Work Authority.
• Correct unsafe conditions and behaviors immediately and report incidents, near misses, property damage, and concerns.
• Never allow schedule or production pressure to override safety requirements.

Cost and Productivity Control

• Understand the labor budget, planned hours, production goals, and cost expectations for assigned work.
• Track daily labor hours and installed quantities and compare actual production to plan.
• Adjust crew size, work methods, supervision, and resource allocation when productivity is below expectations.
• Prevent unnecessary overtime, idle time, standby time, rework, and non-billable labor.
• Ensure tools, equipment, rentals, and materials are used responsibly.
• Notify the Site Manager or Project Manager immediately when cost, labor, or production trends are unfavorable.
• Participate in cost-to-complete reviews and avoid unauthorized extra work.

Timekeeping and Documentation

• Ensure employee time is accurate and submitted by the required deadline.
• Verify employees are charged to the correct project, work order, cost code, and billing classification.
• Review billable and non-billable hours daily and provide clear explanations for non-billable time.
• Correct inaccurate time entries before approval and never approve time without verification.
• Complete or verify daily reports covering manpower, hours, work completed, quantities, equipment, materials, delays, safety, quality, client direction, extra work, and site conditions.
• Ensure extra work tickets and client-directed work are documented and signed when required.

Quality Control

• Ensure work is performed in accordance with drawings, specifications, procedures, and client standards.
• Review work packages and quality requirements before work begins.
• Coordinate inspections and testing and prevent work from being covered, energized, commissioned, or turned over prematurely.
• Correct deficiencies promptly and track and minimize rework.
• Ensure completed work is properly documented and ready for client acceptance.

Materials, Tools, Equipment, and Workforce

• Plan material, tool, equipment, and labor needs in advance.
• Ensure materials are received, stored, protected, issued, and used properly and prevent waste, damage, theft, and unnecessary purchases.
• Ensure equipment is inspected, maintained, accounted for, and operated by qualified personnel.
• Identify idle rental equipment and request off-rental or reassignment.
• Direct and hold General Foremen and Foremen accountable while maintaining proper span of control.
• Address performance, attendance, conduct, and policy concerns promptly and develop future field leaders.

Communication

• Attend daily and weekly planning meetings.
• Provide accurate updates regarding safety, manpower, progress, productivity, cost, quality, equipment, materials, and risks.
• Communicate problems early and recommend solutions.
• Maintain professional communication with clients, employees, subcontractors, and other trades.
• Do not make unauthorized commitments regarding scope, price, schedule, or contract terms.

Decision-Making Authority

The Superintendent has authority to direct assigned field personnel and organize daily work within the approved scope, schedule, budget, safety requirements, and direction of the Site Manager / Construction Manager or Project Manager. Changes affecting scope, contract terms, pricing, major staffing levels, equipment commitments, or schedule milestones require approval through the appropriate management level.
