Job Description
Position Summary:
Reporting directly to the Senior Director of Credit and Risk, the Underwriter (UW) is responsible for managing loan opportunities through the underwriting and closing process. The position will also manage a small portfolio of existing commercial loan clients. This position works closely with members of all Lending teams, especially Business Development and Loan Operations.
The UW is responsible for the proactive management of assigned RSF loans after a term sheet has been executed. The UW will evaluate all aspects of the loan opportunity, including loan structure, covenants, reporting, risk analysis, collateral analysis, and financial analysis. The UW will also serve as the primary point of contact (or at least the coordinator if another primary RSF contact is selected) for all relationships related to loan underwriting and closing, including the borrower/sponsor, title company, legal counsel, 3rd party advisors/consultants, other participant lenders, and any other relationships needed for a given loan.
In coordination with PM and Credit & Risk, UW will also facilitate the transition of the loan into RSF’s portfolio as well as serve as a thought partner with the loan’s assigned Portfolio Manager on topics such as monitoring of borrower compliance, identifying areas of risk, evaluating borrowers’ long-term viability/performance and proactively mitigating potential defaults and loan loss.
The UW will also coordinate with Lending, Business Development, to update the Loan Impact assessment tool, as needed, based on findings during underwriting. is primary point of contact internally for all Credit team involvement with SIF Borrower and Loan Impact assessment and tracking.
In the secondary role as portfolio manager on select assigned credits, the role acts as the primary point of contact and key financial advisor for the assigned borrowers. PM serves as a critical central touch point for building and maintaining external relationships with assigned borrowers.
The UW serves as the lead for 1-2 special projects each year, as needed.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities - Underwriting (70%):
- Underwrite new loan opportunities ensuring compliance with RSF Social Finance policies and procedures.
- Underwrite loan renewals or increases of existing relationships ensuring compliance with RSF policies and procedures.
- Manage documentation and closing process for assigned loans, with support from Director of Credit & Risk and Business Development Officer.
- Support Senior Director of Credit & Risk with new business term sheet review and loan underwriting as assigned.
- Manage/Support Business Development with new loan inquiries and prospects, as needed.
- Perform annual reviews for credit facilities in assigned portfolio and other loans as assigned.
- Recommend modifications to policies, procedures or risk rating methods to improve risk identification and mitigation.
- Utilize data analysis techniques to interpret complex financial data, identify key trends, and provide actionable insights that support decision-making in credit risk and portfolio management.
Portfolio Management (20%)
- Manage a portfolio of 5–10 borrowers, serving as the primary post-close relationship manager in coordination with the originating lender for monitoring, servicing, modifications, and new credit requests.
- Monitor ongoing borrower performance by reviewing financial statements, covenant compliance, impact reporting, collateral, and overall credit quality; conduct periodic site visits and recommend risk rating changes when warranted.
- Partner with Lending, Loan Servicing, and Credit & Risk to resolve compliance issues, delinquencies, restructurings, and other borrower needs while maintaining strong, trusted borrower relationships.
- Maintain accurate loan records and monitoring systems, including loan files, covenant tracking, financial ticklers, and collateral reporting requirements.
- Identify emerging portfolio risks and support portfolio management, including delinquent loan resolution, portfolio reviews, stress testing, and other credit risk initiatives as assigned.
Credit Project Management (10%)
- Attend monthly Troubled Loan Committee meetings to track action items for assigned existing troubled loans
- Compile quarterly loan portfolio reporting for internal and external stakeholders as assigned.
- Liaise with other RSF departments for reporting and coordination of Salesforce dashboards.
- Monitor industry risks as part of portfolio management as requested.
- Provide support to credit team as needed.

Qualifications and Required Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree preferred, in business, accounting, finance, economics or community development. In lieu of degree, 5+ years of relevant experience.
- 2-5 years’ commercial credit underwriting and administration experience, including asset and cash flow-based credit analysis skills, financial modeling skills, and commercial loan structuring.
- Demonstrated competency in commercial portfolio compliance disciplines and terminology, high-level credit and financial analysis, underwriting policies and procedures, and loan restructuring.
- Familiarity with the social finance sector, social enterprise, or one of RSF’s focus areas is preferred
- Statistical Analysis: Ability to apply statistical methods to analyze and interpret data, which helps in forecasting and risk assessment.
- Financial Modeling: Proficiency in creating and managing detailed financial models that simulate the financial performance of different scenarios to assess potential risks
- Excellent customer service skills
- Ability to multi-task and maintain accurate records in varying systems
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to learn new concepts and systems quickly and efficiently
- Must be able to work remotely during RSF’s Pacific Standard Time work hours
- Must be available to occasionally work outside of regular office hours when needed
- Must be available for occasional site visits to new and existing borrowers
Compensation and Benefits:
The salary range for this role is $75,000 - $85,000 per year. Final compensation is determined based on the candidate's location, experience, and skills.
