We Offer
Exceptional trading emerges where human intuition meets frictionless experimentation. Our platform and processes enable traders to rapidly investigate ideas, identify emergent patterns, and convert insights into live strategies. This synthesis creates a flywheel of discovery — the key to our pursuit of excellence.
We are looking for an experienced, hands-on risk professional to own trading risk management at Summit Securities Group. Your mission is to develop a clear view of our exposures, define how much capital we put at risk, and monitor and modify the limits and controls that keep trading within agreed boundaries.
You will be the firm’s sole dedicated risk professional, responsible for both the framework and its daily operation. You will oversee risk across trading desks, investigate changes in exposures and P&L, and work directly with engineers to improve our risk tools and controls.
This role is well suited to a risk officer, deputy, or experienced individual contributor ready to take ownership of a function. Prior experience as a Chief Risk Officer is not required. We are looking for someone who has personally built and improved trading risk management capabilities and wants the responsibility of making them work across a firm.
You will partner directly with traders, quantitative researchers, engineering, operations, compliance, and firm leadership. On our lean team, you will have broad ownership and close access to the people making trading and technology decisions. You will need to understand how our strategies make and lose money, challenge assumptions constructively, and follow issues through to resolution.
- Define Trading Risk Management: Establish practical measures of position risk, exposure, concentration, liquidity, and capital at risk at the strategy, desk, and firm levels.
- Own Limits and Desk Oversight: Develop and monitor position, exposure, and loss limits. Review daily activity, investigate exceptions, and ensure that desks operate within agreed risk parameters.
- Build Risk Tools: Personally develop analyses, dashboards, and reporting that make material risks visible and support timely decisions.
- Implement Trading Controls: Work with engineers to translate risk requirements into pre-trade controls, intraday monitoring, alerts, and escalation mechanisms. Validate that controls operate as intended.
- Apply Regulatory Requirements: Bring working knowledge of the broker-dealer rulebook and applicable regulatory risk limits. Partner with compliance and trading to translate relevant requirements into documented controls and monitoring.
- Assess Downside Scenarios: Conduct stress tests and scenario analysis to understand potential losses, changing correlations, and the ability to reduce or exit positions under difficult conditions.
- Review Trading Changes: Assess new strategies, products, and material changes in trading activity, defining appropriate limits and monitoring before launch.
- Drive Risk Response: Establish clear breach and escalation procedures, exercise agreed intervention authority, and ensure that incidents result in completed improvements.
Requirements
- Hands-on trading risk management experience at a proprietary trading firm, market maker, broker-dealer, hedge fund, or comparable active trading business.
- Direct responsibility for position limits, exposure monitoring, capital-at-risk analysis, and desk oversight.
- Evidence of personally building or materially improving risk programs, tools, or controls.
- Experience working with engineers to define, implement, and validate trading risk management controls.
- Working knowledge of broker-dealer rules and regulatory risk limits relevant to trading activity.
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to independently investigate trading and position data using Python, SQL, or comparable tools.
- Independent judgment, clear communication, and the confidence to challenge traders and senior colleagues constructively.
- The ability to work onsite in our New York office four days per week.
Strongly Preferred
- Experience in a small or lean trading organization with broad individual responsibility.
- Familiarity with systematic or low-latency trading.
- Experience aggregating risk across multiple desks, strategies, or asset classes.
Ideal Profile
You are a builder who can explain what you created, how you defined risk, and how your work changed trading decisions. You are comfortable owning the daily details as well as the broader framework. You value direct collaboration and are ready to take responsibility for a function without a dedicated risk team beneath you.
