Job Description

Position Summary

The Structural Detailer produces the shop-ready models and fabrication drawings for the steel that carries DSI's modular mechanical assemblies — skid frames, equipment stands, pipe racks, seismic supports, lifting lugs, and transport structures. This is not generic building steel detailing. Every frame produced here has to accept mechanical equipment at exact locations, survive over-the-road transport and rigging, and hit a fabrication tolerance the shop can actually hold. The detailer is the bridge between the engineer's design intent and what the fitter reads at the station.

Key Responsibilities

Modeling & Detailing

Build accurate 3D structural models of module frames, skids, racks, stands, and support steel from engineering drawings, sketches, and design criteria.

Produce complete fabrication deliverables: assembly drawings, single-part drawings, erection/set drawings, weld maps, bolt lists, and bills of material.

Detail connections per engineered design — welded and bolted, including weld symbols, sizes, prep, and access.

Model and detail lifting lugs, pick points, transport tie-down provisions, and shipping bracing.

Generate CNC/NC files for the drill line, saw, and plasma/laser as applicable.

Coordination

Coordinate structural steel against mechanical, piping, and electrical content in the module; participate in clash detection and resolve interferences before release.

Verify equipment mounting patterns, anchor bolt layouts, and interface dimensions against approved vendor submittals — not against preliminary cut sheets.

Coordinate module-to-building interfaces, base connections, and field tie-in tolerances with project teams and the GC.

Work in Autodesk Construction Cloud for model exchange, issue tracking, RFIs, and drawing distribution.

Quality & Shop Support

Check own work before submitting; participate in peer checking and incorporate checker/engineer comments.

Maintain material traceability, grade callouts, and finish/coating requirements on all deliverables.

Answer shop floor questions during fabrication; issue clear, tracked revisions without stalling the line.

Update models to as-built condition and support turnover documentation.

Standards

Work within DSI's detailing standards, templates, connection libraries, and naming conventions — and help improve them.

Build reusable families, components, and standard details that shorten the next job.

Required Qualifications

Minimum 4 years of structural steel detailing experience producing shop fabrication drawings.

Proficiency in Tekla Structures and/or SDS/2; working ability in AutoCAD.

Command of AISC detailing conventions and AWS D1.1 weld symbols, joint types, and prep requirements.

Ability to read and interpret structural engineering drawings, specifications, and vendor submittals.

Understanding of steel shapes, grades, plate, tube, and standard mill/fabrication tolerances.

Strong dimensional accuracy and self-checking discipline — this role's errors get welded.

Preferred Qualifications

Modular, skid, or off-site fabrication detailing experience; industrial or process plant steel.

NISD (National Institute of Steel Detailing) detailer certification.

Revit proficiency and experience working in coordinated multi-discipline MEP models.

Navisworks clash detection experience.

Autodesk Construction Cloud experience.

Mission-critical / data center project experience.

Shop floor or welding/fitting background.

Associate degree or technical certificate in drafting, CAD, or engineering technology.

Competencies

Buildable over pretty. Details what the fitter can access, weld, and inspect.

Precision by habit. Checks before sending; doesn't rely on the checker to catch it.

Asks early. Raises the conflict at model stage, not at fabrication.

Shop-fluent. Comfortable walking to the floor and talking through a detail with the welder.

Physical & Work Environment

Primarily office/workstation-based with regular time on the fabrication floor. Occasional site visits. Extended computer work; occasional standing, walking, and climbing in shop and field environments. PPE required when on the floor.

Why DSI

Dynamic Systems has been building the mechanical backbone of America's most demanding facilities since 1988 — semiconductor fabs, data centers, hospitals, and advanced industrial plants where failure is not an option. As a Quanta Services company (NYSE: PWR), we combine the agility and craft culture of a founder-built mechanical contractor with the resources, safety infrastructure, and career reach of one of North America's largest infrastructure solutions providers.

Off-Site Manufacturing is where DSI is investing its future. Our Tomball fabrication facility is not a support function — it's a production operation reshaping how mechanical systems get built: safer, faster, and higher quality than field-built alternatives. As a Structural Detailer here, your drawings don't disappear into a submittal cycle — they walk to the shop floor and get fabricated the same week, and you can go watch it happen. Few detailing roles offer that feedback loop, and fewer offer it with a national project portfolio and 2,400 colleagues behind you.
