Field Sales Representative

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Field Sales Representative based in the United States.

This role is responsible for driving sales and strengthening relationships with independent bookstores across a regional territory in the southeastern United States.
You will serve as a trusted point of contact for bookstore accounts, helping them maximize sales through strong product knowledge and responsive service.
The position combines consultative selling, account management, promotional planning, and market development.
You will present upcoming titles, place seasonal orders, review backlist opportunities, and develop account-specific strategies to support growth.
Success requires close collaboration with internal marketing, publicity, financial services, and sales teams.
The role also offers the opportunity to represent a broad publishing catalog at trade shows, author events, and other industry gatherings.

Accountabilities:
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with established independent bookstore accounts while identifying and developing new business opportunities within the assigned territory.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for accounts, providing timely communication, strong service, and knowledgeable guidance on titles, programs, promotions, and sales processes.
  • Present and sell frontlist titles during seasonal sales appointments, primarily in person with phone appointments as needed, and place orders based on account needs.
  • Keep accounts informed about catalog updates, special offers, publicity initiatives, promotional opportunities, and cooperative advertising programs.
  • Conduct regular backlist reviews and identify opportunities to maximize sales growth within individual stores.
  • Develop account-specific promotional and marketing plans aligned with publisher programs and priority titles.
  • Achieve individual and company sales and budget goals while maintaining accurate account information and regular sales reporting.
  • Provide feedback on titles, promotions, market activity, and sales performance to support commercial decision-making.
  • Advocate for account needs by collaborating with internal Marketing, Publicity, Customer Financial Services, and other departments while maintaining established policies.
  • Maintain a deep understanding of the publishing catalog and stay informed about current industry and publishing trends.
  • Participate in sales meetings, projects, and initiatives with field and telephone sales colleagues, sharing ideas and identifying opportunities for business growth.
  • Attend regional trade shows, Rep Pick nights, occasional author events, and other relevant industry activities as required.

Requirements:

  • At least 6 years of proven sales experience, preferably with a strong background in trade publishing, bookselling, or a related field.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with strong judgment and interpersonal abilities.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage priorities, meet deadlines, and maintain accurate follow-up.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment while also contributing effectively as part of a collaborative sales team.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver timely, accurate work and consistently follow through on commitments.
  • Comfortable with extensive car and air travel and able to maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Genuine enthusiasm for books, reading, and the publishing industry.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel, as well as familiarity with Edelweiss.
  • Ability to build trusted relationships with bookstore partners and communicate effectively with a wide range of business stakeholders.
