Claims Manager

Job Summary

Directs and manages the implementation, development, and continuous improvement of company-wide Workers Compensation, additional casualty lines of insurance, leave administration, and return-to-work programs to care for employees, minimize the impact of absenteeism and reduce the financial impact to the business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversight of Casualty Lines of Insurance Claims (50%): Directs the GL, Auto, and Workers Compensation (WC) Program, which includes responsibility for overseeing the reserving practices, adherence to special handling instructions, and third-party vendor management by the Third Party Administrator (TPA). Manages the daily and monthly financial process including approval of all expenditures made by the TPA and other related program elements. Resolves all discrepancies in accordance with Financial and Procurement policies and procedures. Assess, improve and program manage work comp programs in monopolistic states. Create reports and implements programs and audits to highlight Casualty program compliance and identify areas for improvement.
  • Claims Review: Conducts action-oriented quarterly claim reviews between TPA, Risk Management leadership, and broker using agreed upon protocols. Evaluates performance of all parties and identifies areas for improvement. Develops goals and objectives to enhance future reviews.
  • Claims Management: Manage the life cycle of claims from intake to resolution and engage appropriate internal and external parties, as needed to appropriate intended outcomes.
  • Internal and OSHA reporting/compliance (15%): recording, reporting, record keeping, logs, filing according to OSHA standards. Ensure compliance with OSHA reporting requirements.
  • Vendor Management (10%): Develops and implements audit procedures to ensure TPAs adherence to statutory performance measures. Identifies statutory noncompliance, develops and implements performance improvement plans to promote observance of mandatory performance goals. Oversee triage hotline that provides immediate medical attention to injured employees. Oversee national line of clinics for injury management.
  • Restricted Duty/RTW Program (10%): Develops, implements and oversees policies and procedures in support of the light duty/RTW program. Ensures the program follows applicable statutes, policies and rules. Responsible for developing and implementing policies that maximize coordination and utilization of Marsdens workforce to support the attainment of all company goals.
  • Relationship Management & Training (10%): Creates and presents one-on-one and departmental training programs that focus on compliance and reducing unscheduled absences. Provides testimony and support to Human Resources, Legal, outside counsel, and TPA for employment and compliance issues involving the Workers Compensation, leave of absence, RTW, and restricted duty programs. Develops and implements training initiatives for employees, management and external vendors to enhance program compliance and reduce the impact of lost time on the operating budget.
  • Claim Financials & Analytics (5%): Performs a variety of complex analyses of internal costs; reviews and evaluates incurred costs, schedules, and financial and statistical information. Works with external actuarial partner to monitor loss runs and appropriate accruals. Provides concise on-point reports, supporting analytics and recommendations to management for decision-making.

Secondary Responsibilities

  • Stay current with changes in legislation and regulations in workers compensation, ADA, employment law, HIPAA privacy laws, state and federal leave laws.

Experience and Education Required

  • Bachelors degree in business administration, risk management, industrial relations, Human Resources or other related field.
  • Eight plus years related experience working with applicable laws, policies and statues governing GL, Auto, and Workers Compensation programs with experience in tough jurisdictions like CA, LA, and FL.
  • Preferred: Associate in Risk Management (ARM) Designation or Certified Risk Manager (CRM)
  • Must have strong communication skills, with the ability to present to multiple levels of management and staff. Ability to be able to write clearly and succinctly in a variety of communication settings and styles. Can get messages across that have the desired effect.
  • Ability to work with cross-functional business units and vendors to support the EHS/risk management program; promotes collaboration among constituents and represents a professional image of the company.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

Normal hours on Monday through Friday, 8am-5pm. Claims calls occur outside of normal business hours with early morning, and evening and may require business interaction outside of normal business hours.
