POSITION SUMMARY:

The Master-Level Swim Lessons Instructor provides advanced swim instruction for adult and/or advanced-level swimmers seeking stroke refinement, endurance training, and technique development. This role delivers high-quality, structured lessons that emphasize stroke mechanics, efficiency, conditioning, and safety while fostering a supportive and motivating environment.

The instructor promotes aquatics programs within association guidelines, ensures a safe learning environment, and upholds the YMCA mission of developing confident swimmers through integrity, sportsmanship, and excellence.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provide structured master-level swim instruction focused on advanced stroke development, technique refinement, endurance, and performance improvement.
  • Design progressive lesson plans aligned with YMCA standards and participant goals.
  • Evaluate swimmer performance and provide constructive, individualized feedback.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records and participant progress documentation.
  • Communicate clearly with participants regarding goals, progress, and program offerings.
  • Organize and return equipment after sessions; report damaged equipment and complete incident/accident reports as necessary.
  • Maintain professionalism and model YMCA core values in all interactions.
  • Build effective, authentic relationships with participants and encourage long-term engagement in YMCA aquatics programs.
  • Adhere to policies related to boundaries with members, volunteers, staff, and participants.
  • Attend required Abuse Risk Management training and adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising members and participants.
  • The position is identified as safety sensitive and subject to required, random drug testing.
  • Attend staff meetings and training courses as scheduled.

QUALICATIONS:

  • 2–5 years of swim coaching experience preferred.
  • Strong preference for candidates with a competitive swim background.
  • Strong interpersonal and motivational skills working with adult and advanced swimmers.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in advanced stroke mechanics, starts, turns, and conditioning.
  • Current YMCA Swim Instructor certification or WSI certification preferred (or willingness to obtain within the designated timeframe).
  • Must have a CPR/AED and First Aid Certification OR certified within 90 days of employment.
  • Ability to demonstrate advanced swim skills in accordance with YMCA standards.

RISK & COMPLIANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Report suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations and follow mandated abuse reporting procedures.
  • Respond promptly and confidentially to concerns or policy violations and follow required reporting protocols.
  • Follow all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, best practices, and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures, and support the association’s philanthropy efforts.
  • Adhere to policies related to boundaries with members, volunteers, staff, and participants.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to demonstrate advanced swim techniques and provide in-water instruction as needed.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift and move equipment up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be in good physical condition to demonstrate swimming techniques.
  • Ability to work in a humid, loud, and active pool environment.

WORK SCHEDULE:

Schedule is determined by program demand. Hours are assigned as needed, primarily on weekend mornings and/or afternoons. Session times may vary, with the possibility of additional hours based on enrollment and program growth. The schedule is subject to change.

HOURLY PAY RATE: $24.00- $27.00
