About the City

Woodinville, Washington is a premier tourist destination with a population of about 14,000, though the City will likely grow rapidly over the next five years or so. This growth is resulting in lots of exciting projects and programs. Located about 20 miles northeast of Seattle, Woodinville offers the benefits of a bustling urban area against the backdrop of the picturesque Sammamish River Valley. Woodinville is known for its tourism industries with over 130 wineries, breweries, and distilleries and numerous opportunities for outdoor activities.

The City of Woodinville Executive Department is seeking an enthusiastic summer intern that will have the opportunity to gain experience in city management, community engagement, intergovernmental relations, and other city functions. If you have a desire to contribute, a willingness to be challenged, and interest in local government, we have a perfect internship for you!

The Executive Department intern is a paid part-time internship program designed for undergraduate, graduate, or advanced degree students who are interested in pursuing a career in public service, learning about local government processes, and/or applying academic knowledge and skills in a practical manner within various public service professions. The intern will be supervised by the Assistant City Manager in the department.

City staff are dedicated to providing the selected intern with the tools and knowledge to successfully launch a career in local government. As the Executive Department intern, you will have an opportunity to experience meaningful work, define your career goals, and develop new skills.

This position is designed to be flexible. The average hours per week will range between 20-30 hours. Specific job tasks and working hours may vary depending on a candidate’s skills, interests, schedule, and experience.

As the Executive Intern you will

• Prepare program reports on various programs and Council member initiatives.
• Assist in building partnerships with stakeholders and the public on different community-wide programs and activities.
• May be required to attend City Council meetings and community meetings after normal business hours to collect feedback from the public on various issues.
• Perform a variety of tasks, including project management activities, in carrying out the direction of the City Manager, Assistant City Manager, or Community Engagement Coordinator on a wide range of municipal issues.
• Assist the City Manager and Community Engagement Coordinator in working with designated departments towards the achievement of departmental objectives and the objectives of the city government.
• Assist in developing and scheduling content for the City’s digital communication needs, including but not limited to Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and the city website.
• Assist with the City’s external and internal communications efforts; and assist with the development of communication strategies for the City. This includes but is not limited to drafting press releases and working with project managers across all departments to create timely communications campaigns to help announce key milestones and engagement opportunities.
• Carry out other program related duties as required.
• Support the Intergovernmental Relational Program Manager in attending to relationships with elected officials and preparing official correspondence on a variety of subject areas.
• Analyze and monitor committee meetings and prepare updates on issues relevant to the City.
• Assist in a variety of special projects housed within Intergovernmental Relations (micro transportation, legislation, grants, etc.)
• Conduct research and policy analysis on various economic development opportunities: Research peer governments and organizations' operations and strategies to inform City policies or programs. Research could be in relation to, business development, special events and programming, or other areas.
• Assist with the coordination and implementation of City economic development programs, meetings, and events.

Minimum Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED; AND
• Two years of undergraduate study; OR
• In place of the above requirements, the incumbent may possess any combination of relevant education and experience which would demonstrate the individual’s knowledge, skill, and ability to proficiently perform the essential duties and responsibilities listed above.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior internship or volunteer experience in government, non-profit or professional setting
• Pursuing degree in Public Administration

Physical Requirements

Work is primarily performed in an indoor setting. While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent must frequently sit and talk or hear; occasionally stand, walk, grip or feel with hands, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and lift objects weighing up to 25 pounds. The nature of the work has frequent interruptions. Requires strong public communication skills. May occasionally be required to work beyond normal working hours, weekends, and holidays. The ability to operate a personal computer is required. This position may also require substantial phone use and the ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of audiences.

Compensation, Classification and Labor Representation

The full salary range for this position is step # 1 $25.96 per hour to step # 2 $27.00 per hour. The appointment will typically be made at step # 1 $25.96 per hour.

This position is eligible for overtime and is non-represented. It is classified as an Intern. Classification descriptions are typically written broadly and may not include all specific duties and responsibilities of the position.
