Job Description
Purpose of Position:
Perform operation and maintenance tasks on the County’s water distribution system
and wastewater collection system to provide superior quality water and wastewater
services to the customer.
Essential Functions of Position:
Perform daily maintenance and repair of water treatment, delivery systems and
wastewater collection systems.
Monitor water quality and wastewater flows.
Perform in-house repairs and/or replace faulty equipment as needed.
Respond to water and wastewater system failures and perform emergency repairs
after normal working hours.
Support customer service as needed.
Monitor and perform water & sewer line marking requests.
Operator I may service as crew lead and provide technical guidance to Operator II.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide a full range of maintenance and repairs to water & wastewater systems,
including, but not limited to, servicing pumps, motors, valves, and piping.
Maintaining pump stations.
Maintain records, perform data entry, and provide detailed reporting.
Collecting water & wastewater samples and perform testing as required by federal,
state and/or local agencies.
Oversee management of any water & wastewater lab testing.
Troubleshooting malfunctions.
Preventative maintenance and repairs of equipment and infrastructure.
Monitoring chemical feeds and effectiveness of water treatment.
Regularly reading of meters and gauges and adjusting as needed.
Updating maps and water/sewer infrastructure plans as needed.
Locating utilities in streets, roadways, and other areas.
Periodically flushing water distribution systems.
Responding to breakdowns and system failure emergencies, subject to on-call
availability, with mandatory weekends with a reasonable response time.
As needed, support customer service by explaining problems and activities to
customers.
Other duties as assigned.
Education/Experience/Certifications (minimum qualifications):
Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
Minimum one year experience in the Water and/or Wastewater field, two or more
years of experience preferred.
Knowledge of underground utilities, plumbing, or mechanical work is beneficial
and preferred for this role.
Must have good verbal communication skills and the ability to work well with the
public.
Must currently possess or within one year obtain, the Maryland Water Treatment
and Distribution Certifications and Maryland Wastewater Collection Certification.
Must possess and maintain a valid MD Driver’s License.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
Ability to follow written, verbal, and diagram-based instructions.
Knowledge Microsoft Office, including Excel and Word.
Must be available for night and weekend on-call status.
Ability to read and interpret design & engineering plans relative to water &
wastewater infrastructure.
Ability to work well with others in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
Ability to be respectful, approachable, and team-oriented while building strong
working relationships and a positive work environment.
Physical requirements and working environment:
Mobility to work in a typical shop or related maintenance setting, including
operating typical trade equipment, hand and power tools and standard office
equipment, and driving a motor vehicle to various work sites.
Stamina to stand, walk, climb, and work for extended periods in confined spaces,
at heights over 10 feet, or in awkward positions.
Strength to lift and maneuver materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
but occasionally up to 75 pounds.
Vision to read printed materials and computer screen; and hearing and speech to
communicate in person or over a radio or telephone.
Work is subject to exposure to extreme weather conditions, sewage, hazardous
chemicals, electrical currents, gases, dust, and noxious odors. Work is subject to
performance in wastewater and water facilities.
Other:
May be required to work on religious holidays.
CDL Preferred.
Regular and predictable attendance is required.
Must work cooperatively with others.
When position requires vehicle operation, responsible for the
safety, readiness and operation of the vehicle and must abide by
Dorchester’s safe driving policy.
