Job Description
We are seeking a passionate and dedicated individual to join our team as an Outdoor Early Childhood Teaching Assistant. This position plays a crucial role in supporting the educational experiences of young children in an outdoor setting, fostering their curiosity, growth, and development through nature-based learning activities.
Responsibilities:
- Assist in Program Implementation: Support the lead educator in planning and executing developmentally appropriate outdoor activities that align with the curriculum and educational goals. This includes setting up outdoor learning environments, preparing materials, and ensuring a safe and stimulating outdoor space for children.
- Engage with Children: Interact with children in a positive and nurturing manner, fostering their curiosity and love for nature. Encourage exploration, play, and hands-on learning experiences that promote physical activity, sensory exploration, and environmental awareness.
- Support Learning Experiences: Assist in facilitating age-appropriate activities that promote cognitive, social-emotional, and physical development. Encourage children to ask questions, problem-solve, and engage in cooperative play while exploring the natural world.
- Promote Safety and Well-being: Maintain a safe outdoor environment by adhering to health and safety protocols, monitoring children’s activities, and responding promptly to any safety concerns. Provide gentle guidance and supervision to ensure children’s well-being during outdoor play and learning.
- Collaborate with Educators and Families: Work collaboratively with the lead educator, fellow teaching assistants, and families to support children’s individual needs and development. Communicate effectively with parents/guardians regarding children’s progress, activities, and any important updates.
- Documentation and Reflection: Assist in documenting children’s learning experiences through observations, photos, and anecdotal notes. Participate in reflective practices with the team to evaluate and improve upon outdoor learning opportunities for children.
RELATIONSHIPS AND ACCOUNTABILITY
Directly accountable to the Nature School Lead Teacher and Director
QUALIFICATIONS
1-2 years’ experience with young children
Participates in an active outdoor lifestyle or has experience in outdoor education
Understanding and commitment to the nature preschool model and alternative education
Demonstrates ability to work as part of a team
Must have strong written and verbal communication skills
Must be willing to work flexible hours and in all weather in order to meet the needs of the program
