Company Overview

WMI is known for superior service and unmatched integrity, delivering large-scale steel distribution and fabrication solutions for end users and steel distributors across the Southwest United States.

Role Summary

The ASME Quality Inspector supports safe, compliant, and efficient fabrication by performing receiving, in-process, and final inspections for rolled and welded components produced in the Roll/Welding Department. This role verifies conformance to customer requirements and applicable codes/standards (including ASME, as applicable) through visual inspection, dimensional verification, documentation review, traceability checks, and coordination of NDE/NDT activities.

This position is intended to strengthen quality execution within the shop while supporting production flow. The inspector may continue to perform production tasks that do not create a conflict of interest with inspection responsibilities (for example: rolling support, material handling, fit-up assistance, staging, and documentation support), but will not weld on items or weld seams that he will inspect and release.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform receiving, in-process, and final inspection activities for Roll/Weld work orders, including cylinders/shells, cones, segments, beams, and assemblies.
  • Review job packets, drawings, weld symbols, customer specifications, and quality requirements to establish inspection points and acceptance criteria.
  • Verify material identification and traceability (heat numbers, MTRs, part marking, travelers) throughout fabrication; confirm correct material grade and thickness.
  • Conduct visual weld inspections to applicable acceptance criteria (e.g., surface discontinuities, profile, undercut, overlap, arc strikes, cleanliness) and verify welds meet WPS requirements as applicable.
  • Verify dimensional conformance (OD/ID, roundness, straightness, seam gap, alignment, squareness, length, nozzle/feature locations) using tapes, squares, levels, templates, and other measurement tools.
  • Monitor and document required preheat/interpass temperature checks when specified; confirm fit-up and joint prep meet WPS and drawing requirements prior to welding.
  • Coordinate NDE/NDT (VT, MT, PT, UT, RT or other methods as required) with internal resources and/or third-party providers; ensure results are documented and communicated.
  • Support Authorized Inspector (AI) or customer witness points by staging parts, preparing documentation, and facilitating safe access to inspection locations.
  • Initiate and manage nonconformance documentation (NCRs), including tagging/segregation, description of condition, containment actions, and routing for disposition.
  • Verify corrective actions and rework/repair results; confirm repairs are performed to approved methods and reinspected prior to release.
  • Maintain accurate quality records: inspection checklists, weld maps, travelers, NDE reports, continuity/qualification documentation as applicable, and release sign-offs.
  • Communicate inspection status and quality concerns in real time to the Welding Manager/Roll & Weld Supervisor, planners, and production teams to protect schedule and reduce rework.
  • Support calibration control by verifying inspection tools are within calibration and by reporting damaged/out-of-calibration tools.
  • Participate in root-cause investigations for defects, repairs, and customer complaints; help implement preventive actions and standard work improvements.
  • Maintain housekeeping and 5S expectations in inspection and staging areas; enforce safe work practices and PPE requirements during inspection activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned that support Roll/Weld production, provided they do not compromise inspection independence (see Independence and Conflict-of-Interest section).
  • Independence and Conflict-of-Interest Requirements

To protect the integrity of inspection results, the ASME Quality Inspector must remain independent from the work being accepted or released. Accordingly:

  • The inspector shall not perform welding on any item, component, or weld seam that he will inspect, accept, or release.
  • If the inspector performs production support tasks on an item (e.g., rolling assistance, fit-up help, handling, staging), inspection acceptance for the affected characteristics will be performed or verified by another qualified individual designated by supervision/Quality.
  • Inspection sign-off authority includes the right to stop work, hold product, or require rework/repair when acceptance criteria are not met.
  • Any potential conflict must be disclosed immediately to the Quality Manager and shop leadership so responsibilities can be reassigned appropriately.
  • Key Interfaces
  • Quality Manager / Quality Coordinator – quality system requirements, documentation, NCRs, audits, customer complaints.
  • Welding Manager / Roll & Weld Supervisor – daily priorities, work sequencing, repair coordination, staffing support.
  • Fabrication Planner & Scheduler – inspection readiness, witness points, packaging/documentation timing.
  • Maintenance – inspection tool needs, equipment issues affecting quality (roll alignment, machine condition).
  • Customer / Third-Party Inspectors / Authorized Inspector – witness/hold points, documentation, and compliance support.
  • Personal Skills
  • Strong attention to detail; consistent and unbiased judgment against acceptance criteria.
  • Clear communication with shop and office personnel; able to provide actionable feedback respectfully.
  • Organized and dependable; capable of managing multiple jobs and shifting priorities.
  • Comfortable working in a heavy industrial environment around cranes, forklifts, rolling equipment, and welding operations.
  • Customer-focused mindset with urgency to resolve issues and protect delivery commitments.
  • Minimum Qualifications
  • 3+ years of experience in steel fabrication, welding/rolling operations, quality inspection, or a related industrial role (or equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Working knowledge of welding processes (SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, SAW) and common weld discontinuities; ability to perform competent visual inspection.
  • Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings, weld symbols, and work orders; solid shop math and measurement skills (tape to 1/32 in., fractions/decimals).
  • Understanding of traceability requirements and quality documentation (travelers, weld maps, MTRs, inspection checklists).
  • Experience coordinating or witnessing NDE/NDT is preferred.
  • Proficiency with basic computer tools (Microsoft Office) and ability to complete documentation accurately and on time.
  • High school diploma or GED required; additional technical training in welding, inspection, or quality is a plus.
  • Preferred Certifications (as applicable)
  • AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) or equivalent inspection credential.
  • ASNT Level II (MT/PT/UT/RT) or experience working closely with NDE providers.
  • Forklift and/or overhead crane certification; rigging training.
  • Training or experience with ASME Code work (e.g., ASME Section VIII) and customer/third-party inspection protocols.
  • Work Environment and Physical Demands

Work is performed primarily in an industrial shop environment with overhead cranes, forklifts, welding arcs, and heavy steel products. Frequent standing, walking, bending, gripping, climbing onto/around large fabrications and equipment, and visual inspection at close range and at heights. Regular exposure to noise, heat, fumes, dust, sparks, and changing temperatures. Regular use of PPE: hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toe boots, gloves, hearing protection, and additional PPE as tasks require.
