Job Description

Allegheny Family Network (AFN) is seeking dedicated, passionate, and community-minded individuals to serve on our Board of Directors. This is a meaningful opportunity to help guide a respected family-run organization that empowers families raising children with behavioral health and emotional challenges through peer support, advocacy, education, and leadership development.

As a Board Member, you will play a vital role in supporting AFN's mission, strengthening its impact, and ensuring the organization continues to serve families across Allegheny County with excellence and compassion. This voluntary leadership position is ideal for individuals who are committed to family advocacy, behavioral health awareness, and community engagement.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support AFN's mission, vision, and strategic goals
  • Participate actively in Board meetings and committee work
  • Provide governance, oversight, and strategic direction for the organization
  • Serve as an ambassador for AFN within the community
  • Assist with identifying partnerships, funding opportunities, and community resources
  • Support efforts to increase awareness of family peer support services and advocacy initiatives
  • Contribute expertise and perspectives that strengthen organizational decision-making
  • Promote equity, inclusion, and family-driven practices in all aspects of governance
Board Member Responsibilities

As a member of the Board of Directors, individuals uphold the legal and ethical responsibilities of nonprofit governance through the Duty of Care, Duty of Loyalty, and Duty of Obedience, including:

  • Preparing for and actively participating in Board meetings
  • Reviewing organizational reports, financial statements, and strategic initiatives
  • Supporting the approval and oversight of annual budgets and organizational policies
  • Ensuring compliance with applicable nonprofit regulations and governing documents
  • Avoiding conflicts of interest and maintaining confidentiality when required
  • Acting in the best interests of AFN and the families it serves
  • Supporting fundraising and resource development efforts as appropriate
Time Commitment
  • Attendance at regular Board meetings
  • Participation on at least one Board committee
  • Attendance at key AFN events and community engagement activities
  • Participation in strategic planning and Board development initiatives

Estimated Annual Commitment: 40-60 hours

Term: Three years, renewable in accordance with Board bylaws

Qualifications

We are seeking individuals who bring a combination of the following:

  • Passion for supporting families, children, and behavioral health initiatives
  • Experience in nonprofit leadership, governance, community engagement, or related fields
  • Knowledge or lived experience related to family support, behavioral health, education, social services, or advocacy
  • Strategic thinking and a commitment to organizational excellence
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and family-centered practices
  • Professional expertise in areas such as finance, legal, healthcare, human resources, fundraising, marketing, public policy, or community development is highly valued
