CMM Operator / Quality Inspector – PC-DMIS

Position Summary

JM Fabrication is seeking a CMM Operator / Quality Inspector with PC-DMIS experience to perform dimensional inspections of manufactured parts and assemblies. This role uses a Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) and precision measuring instruments to verify compliance with engineering drawings, Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) requirements, and customer specifications.

The ideal candidate has hands-on CMM experience, strong blueprint-reading skills, and the judgment to recognize questionable measurement results and communicate quality concerns. Experience programming in PC-DMIS is preferred.

Key Responsibilities

• Set up and operate CMM equipment using PC-DMIS to run approved inspection programs, review measurement results, and generate inspection reports.
• Verify part identification, drawing revision, inspection program, fixturing, probe qualification, and part alignment before accepting inspection results.
• Perform first article inspection (FAI), in-process inspection, final inspection, and receiving inspection as assigned.
• Read and interpret engineering blueprints, technical specifications, and GD&T per ASME Y14.5, using the revision required by the drawing or customer.
• Apply GD&T requirements to inspection setups and results, including datum reference frames, feature control frames, basic dimensions, position, profile, flatness, perpendicularity, parallelism, and runout.
• Interpret material condition requirements, including maximum material condition (MMC), least material condition (LMC), regardless of feature size (RFS), and bonus tolerance, where applicable.
• Use micrometers, calipers, height gauges, dial indicators, gauge pins, and surface plates to perform manual inspections and verify measurements.
• Investigate unexpected readings and escalate concerns involving part setup, alignment, inspection programs, or drawing interpretation.
• Document inspection results accurately and maintain traceability to the applicable part, job, drawing revision, and inspection equipment.
• Identify, document, and segregate nonconforming material according to company procedures. Communicate discrepancies promptly to Quality and Production.
• Support AS9102 first article inspection reports when required by the customer.
• Verify equipment calibration status, perform routine operator checks and cleaning, and report equipment damage or performance concerns.
• Support root cause investigations, corrective actions, and improvements to inspection methods.
• Maintain an organized inspection area and follow company quality and safety procedures.

Required Qualifications

• Two or more years of dimensional inspection experience in manufacturing, including hands-on CMM operation.
• Practical experience using PC-DMIS to load and run existing CMM programs, verify alignments, and interpret inspection results.
• Ability to read engineering drawings and apply GD&T to actual part setups and measurements.
• Proficiency with precision measuring instruments and manual dimensional inspection.
• Understanding of how fixturing, alignment, cleanliness, and temperature can affect measurement accuracy.
• Strong attention to detail and the ability to maintain accurate, complete inspection records.
• Clear communication skills and the ability to explain inspection findings to Quality and Production personnel.
• Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Excel and electronic inspection or manufacturing records.
• Ability to work independently within established procedures and recognize when technical guidance is needed.

Preferred Qualifications

• CMM programming experience in PC-DMIS, including creating, modifying, troubleshooting, and validating inspection programs.
• Experience inspecting precision machined parts, fabricated components, or assemblies.
• Experience working within an AS9100 or ISO 9001 quality management system.
• Familiarity with AS9102 First Article Inspection (FAI) documentation.
• Understanding of CNC machining, milling, turning, or fabrication processes.
• Familiarity with Statistical Process Control (SPC) and Measurement System Analysis (MSA).
• Technical training or certification in metrology, GD&T, quality inspection, or manufacturing.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

• Work in an inspection and manufacturing environment with exposure to normal shop noise.
• Stand or sit for extended periods while setting up parts, operating equipment, and documenting results.
• Handle parts and inspection equipment requiring precise positioning and manual dexterity.
• Lift and move parts weighing up to 50 pounds, using assistance or lifting equipment as appropriate.
