Description:

Position Summary

We are seeking a highly analytical and detail-oriented Senior Staff Accountant to join our accounting and finance team. This position will play a key role in the preparation, analysis, and accuracy of the company’s financial reporting and will be responsible for ensuring that financial information is complete, reliable, timely, and useful to management.

The ideal candidate is not simply focused on recording transactions or completing month-end tasks. We are looking for someone who can analyze financial results, identify trends and variances, reconcile complex accounts, investigate discrepancies, and translate financial data into meaningful reporting for leadership.

This role will have significant responsibility for financial reporting, bank and balance sheet reconciliations, general ledger analysis, month-end close, variance analysis, and management reporting. The Senior Staff Accountant will work closely with leadership and other members of the accounting team to strengthen financial controls, improve reporting processes, and provide greater visibility into the financial performance of the organization.

Requirements:

Key Responsibilities

Financial Reporting & Analysis

  • Take a lead role in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting packages.
  • Prepare and analyze income statements, balance sheets, cash flow reports, general ledger reports, and supporting financial schedules.
  • Perform detailed analysis of financial results and provide clear explanations for significant changes, trends, and variances.
  • Conduct month-over-month, year-over-year, budget-to-actual, and forecast-to-actual variance analysis.
  • Identify unusual financial activity, inconsistencies, emerging trends, and potential areas of financial risk.
  • Analyze revenue, expenses, operating costs, cash activity, and other key financial metrics.
  • Develop financial reports and supporting schedules that provide management with greater visibility into company performance.
  • Assist leadership with ad hoc financial analysis, financial modeling, forecasting, and decision-support reporting.
  • Ensure financial reports are accurate, complete, properly supported, and delivered within established deadlines.
  • Continuously evaluate existing financial reports and recommend improvements to make reporting more accurate, efficient, and useful to management.
  • Assist in developing and monitoring KPIs and other financial performance metrics.
  • Translate complex accounting data into clear financial insights for both accounting and non-accounting leadership.

Bank & Balance Sheet Reconciliations

  • Perform and review bank reconciliations across multiple accounts and/or entities.
  • Investigate and resolve discrepancies between bank activity, the general ledger, and supporting documentation.
  • Maintain accurate reconciliation schedules and ensure reconciling items are addressed promptly.
  • Perform detailed balance sheet account reconciliations, including cash, prepaid expenses, accrued expenses, accounts payable, accounts receivable, intercompany accounts, fixed assets, liabilities, and other general ledger accounts.
  • Analyze aged or unusual reconciling items and coordinate corrective entries when necessary.
  • Monitor cash activity and assist with cash reporting and cash flow analysis.
  • Ensure all reconciliations maintain appropriate supporting documentation and a clear audit trail.

General Ledger & Month-End Close

  • Play a key role in the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes.
  • Prepare and review journal entries, accruals, reclassifications, allocations, and other accounting adjustments.
  • Perform detailed general ledger analysis to identify errors, unusual transactions, duplicate activity, or incorrect classifications.
  • Review account activity for completeness and accuracy before financial statements are finalized.
  • Maintain supporting schedules for key general ledger accounts.
  • Assist with intercompany accounting and reconciliation between related entities, as applicable.
  • Ensure transactions are recorded in accordance with company accounting policies and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Support efforts to improve the speed, accuracy, and consistency of the month-end close process.

Analytics & Financial Insights

  • Perform deep-dive financial analysis to understand the drivers behind financial performance.
  • Identify patterns and trends within large financial datasets and communicate meaningful findings to management.
  • Develop recurring analytical reports that help leadership understand where money is being spent, how results are changing, and where potential financial issues or opportunities exist.
  • Analyze operating expenses and identify significant fluctuations or areas requiring additional review.
  • Assist with budgeting and forecasting by analyzing historical financial performance and current trends.
  • Create schedules, dashboards, and financial models to support management decision-making.
  • Proactively identify opportunities for cost savings, process improvements, stronger controls, and improved financial performance.
  • Assist management with special projects requiring financial research, data analysis, or modeling.

Internal Controls & Audit Support

  • Maintain strong documentation and supporting schedules for financial transactions and account balances.
  • Assist with internal and external audit requests, including preparation of supporting documentation and account analyses.
  • Help identify weaknesses in accounting processes and recommend improvements to strengthen internal controls.
  • Ensure accounting procedures are consistently followed and appropriately documented.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining accounting policies, procedures, and standardized reporting processes.

Process Improvement

  • Evaluate existing accounting and reporting processes and identify opportunities for automation and efficiency.
  • Improve the organization and consistency of financial reporting packages and reconciliation schedules.
  • Develop templates and standardized procedures that improve accuracy and reduce manual work.
  • Partner with accounting and operational teams to improve the quality and reliability of financial data.
  • Assist with accounting system improvements, reporting tools, integrations, and other finance-related projects.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
  • Public Accounting experience and Property Management experience PREFERRED.
  • Minimum of 3 years of progressive accounting experience, with demonstrated experience in financial reporting, financial analysis, general ledger accounting, and account reconciliations.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and fundamental accounting principles.
  • Demonstrated experience preparing, reviewing, and analyzing financial statements and management reports.
  • Strong experience with bank reconciliations, balance sheet reconciliations, journal entries, general ledger analysis, and month-end close.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to identify financial trends, investigate variances, recognize discrepancies, and explain the drivers behind financial results.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including PivotTables, XLOOKUP/VLOOKUP, SUMIFS, complex formulas, data analysis, and working with large data sets.
  • Experience working with accounting or ERP systems.
  • Experience with multi-entity accounting strongly preferred.
  • Experience supporting audits and maintaining detailed financial schedules preferred.
  • CPA or CPA-track experience is a PREFERRED.

Skills & Competencies

  • Highly analytical with the ability to understand the story behind the numbers.
  • Extremely detail-oriented while still able to understand the larger financial picture.
  • Strong at identifying discrepancies and tracing financial activity back to its source.
  • Comfortable working with large volumes of financial data.
  • Able to independently investigate and resolve accounting discrepancies.
  • Strong in financial statement analysis and management reporting.
  • Organized and capable of managing multiple deadlines during month-end and year-end close.
  • Able to communicate financial information clearly to leadership and non-finance team members.
  • Proactive in identifying problems rather than waiting for issues to be discovered.
  • Comfortable challenging financial results when something does not appear accurate or reasonable.
  • Able to maintain confidentiality when working with sensitive financial information.

What Success Looks Like

Success in this position means leadership can rely on the Senior Staff Accountant to provide accurate numbers, strong financial analysis, clean reconciliations, and timely reporting.

This individual should be able to look at a financial statement or general ledger and not simply confirm that the numbers balance, but ask: Why did this change? What is driving this variance? Does this result make sense? What needs to be investigated? What does management need to know?

The Senior Staff Accountant will be expected to bring that analytical mindset to the accounting function and help ensure the organization has reliable financial information to support informed business decisions.
