Job Description

Position Title:
Lead Teacher
Reports To:
Director and/or Assistant Director
Position Summary:
The Lead Teacher is responsible for creating and maintaining a safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate learning environment for children. The Lead Teacher plans and implements curriculum, supervises classroom staff, maintains compliance with DCFS licensing standards, and builds positive relationships with children, families, and coworkers.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Classroom Management
Maintain a safe, clean, and organized classroom environment.
Ensure active supervision of children at all times.
Establish and maintain consistent classroom routines and expectations.
Promote positive behavior guidance and social-emotional development.
Maintain compliance with all DCFS licensing regulations and center policies.
Curriculum and Child Development
Plan and implement age-appropriate curriculum and activities.
Support children's cognitive, physical, social, and emotional growth.
Conduct observations and assessments as required.
Create engaging learning experiences through play, exploration, and hands-on activities.
Prepare and maintain classroom materials and learning centers.
Staff Leadership
Provide direction and support to assistant teachers and classroom aides.
Foster teamwork and positive communication within the classroom.
Model professionalism and adherence to center policies.
Communicate classroom needs and concerns to administration promptly.
Family Communication
Build positive relationships with families.
Communicate regularly regarding children's development, accomplishments, and concerns.
Maintain confidentiality regarding children, families, and staff.
Participate in conferences and family events as needed.
Health and Safety
Follow all health, safety, sanitation, and emergency procedures.
Monitor children for signs of illness or injury and report concerns to administration.
Maintain accurate attendance and classroom records.
Complete incident reports, medication logs, and other required documentation accurately and promptly.
Professional Expectations
Arrive on time and maintain reliable attendance.
Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor.
Participate in required trainings, staff meetings, and professional development opportunities.
Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to assist throughout the center as needed.
Qualifications:
Must meet Illinois DCFS qualifications for Lead Teacher.
Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education preferred.
Previous experience working in a licensed childcare setting preferred.
Strong classroom management and communication skills.
Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
CPR, First Aid, and Mandated Reporter certifications required or willing to obtain.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
Ability to sit, stand, bend, kneel, and actively engage with children throughout the day.
Ability to supervise children indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions.
