Position Summary

  • The Custodian supports the mission and daily operations of John A. Logan College by maintaining clean, safe, and service-ready facilities that support instruction, student learning, and campus activities.
  • This position performs routine custodial, floor care, and facility setup work to ensure College buildings are properly maintained and available for academic, administrative, and event use.


Education, Experience, and Additional Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience performing custodial or janitorial work in a commercial, institutional, or similar environment

Special Requirements:

  • Must have a valid Illinois driver’s license
  • Must possess or obtain an OSHA 10 certification within ninety (90) days of employment
  • Must be able to work at heights of 40 feet or more
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires prolonged periods of standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, and lifting in the performance of custodial duties.
  • Requires the ability to lift, move, and carry custodial equipment, furniture, supplies, and materials using appropriate methods or equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Requires the ability to work at heights of 40 feet or more, including the use of ladders or similar equipment, in the performance of assigned duties.
  • Requires sufficient manual dexterity and coordination to operate custodial tools, cleaning equipment, and vehicles safely and effectively.
  • Requires the ability to perform physically active work throughout a scheduled work shift.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain clean, sanitary, and service-ready campus facilities by performing routine custodial duties that support instruction, student learning, and daily College operations.
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms, classrooms, offices, public areas, and common spaces by emptying trash; dusting; disinfecting surfaces; and cleaning windows, furniture, fixtures, walls, and equipment to ensure a safe and welcoming environment.
  • Perform comprehensive floor care, including sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, vacuuming, stripping, sealing, finishing, and polishing floors to maintain appearance, safety, and durability.
  • Operate, use, and maintain custodial equipment, tools, and vehicles—including power and hand equipment—in accordance with established procedures and safety requirements.
  • Prepare and apply cleaning solutions by properly mixing water and approved chemical cleaners according to specifications to ensure effective cleaning and prevent damage to facilities and fixtures.
  • Identify and report maintenance issues, safety hazards, and facility deficiencies to supervisors to support timely repairs and ensure compliance with safety standards.
  • Set up, arrange, and remove furniture, equipment, ladders, scaffolding, and decorations to prepare facilities for campus events, meetings, and activities.
  • Move and transport furniture, equipment, and supplies manually or using material-handling equipment to support custodial and operational needs across assigned areas.
  • Requisition and manage custodial supplies and equipment to ensure continuity of cleaning and maintenance operations.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors and coworkers via radio, phone, and written materials to coordinate work activities and respond to operational needs.
  • Perform routine building support tasks, such as changing light bulbs, to maintain basic building functionality and appearance.
  • Organize and complete assigned custodial work at a steady pace throughout the scheduled work period to meet operational standards across assigned areas.


Work Environment:

  • Work is performed primarily in indoor campus environments, including classrooms, offices, restrooms, laboratories, public areas, and event spaces.
  • May be exposed to cleaning chemicals, dust, noise, and other conditions typical of custodial and facilities work.
  • May work in varying environmental conditions, including exposure to weather when performing exterior-related tasks or transporting materials between buildings.
  • Requires adherence to College safety procedures and the proper use of personal protective equipment as applicable.
  • May require evening, weekend, or overtime work to support campus operations, events, or emergency situations.
