Job Description

RN Night Shift Resource Nurse

The RN Night Shift Resource Nurse provides direct and indirect patient care in a diverse healthcare environment in accordance with established policies, procedures and protocols of GCGH. Communicates with physicians about changes in patient's clinical condition including hemodynamic monitoring, results of diagnostic studies and symptomatology. Responds quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment. Must be able to recognize and effectively treat life-threatening conditions.

Department: Resource pool- ICU-Emergency department (ED)-House Supervisor- Med-Surg- & OB if experienced

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs triage, while considering both physical and psychosocial elements.
  • Manages basic life support needs and stabilizes patients until the attending physician is available, based upon nursing standards and protocol.
  • Initiates patient education plan, as prescribed by physician. Teaches patients and significant others how to manage their illness/injury, by explaining: post-treatment home care needs, diet/nutrition/exercise programs, self-administration of medication and rehabilitation, as well as provides referrals to other healthcare professionals for follow-up treatment \displays professionalism while completing multiple urgent tasks in a timely manner.
  • Consults and coordinates with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans.
  • Prepares and administers (orally, subcutaneously, through an IV) and records prescribed medications. Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments in accordance with the policy regarding the administration of medications by a licensed registered nurse.
  • Carries out nursing and physician orders.
  • Ensures that hospital policies and procedures are followed.
  • Participates in patient care as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Interfaces with various nursing departments to facilitate patient and nursing staff placement in accordance with department and staffing needs.
  • Monitors and adjusts specialized equipment used on patients and interprets and records electronic displays.
  • Initiates corrective action whenever the patient displays adverse symptomatology.
  • Mentors nursing staff and provides leadership for continuous development and empowerment of individual staff members.
  • Changes dressings, inserts catheters/IV’s, monitor’s Arterial Lines/CVP/BI-PAP/Mechanical Ventilation.
  • Prepares equipment and aids physician during examination and treatment of patient.
  • Responds to life-saving situations based upon nursing standards and protocol.
  • Participates in discharge planning.
  • Records all care information concisely, accurately and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the appropriate forms.
  • May be required to be "on-call."
  • Protects patient privacy and maintains confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA laws.
  • Demonstrates clear ownership of workplace and patient safety.
  • Reports mistakes, near misses, adverse events and quality and safety concerns.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.

Job Requirements

Education: Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing.

Certification/Licensure: Indiana State licensure as a Registered Nurse is required. BLS required within one month of hire. ACLS and PALS Certification required within 3 months of hire. TNCC preferred. NRP required within 6 months of hire.

Experience: Five (5) years of department specific RN acute care -emergency, intensive care, or equivalent nursing experience is required to fill this position. Bachelor's degree preferred. Excellent internal and external customer service experience required.

The ability to float to different Clinical Areas is required.

Physical Requirements: Frequent sitting, standing and walking. Ability to reach, stoop, pull and bend. Frequently lift up to 50 lbs or more.
