You will also play a key role in hiring, project communication, delivery practices, and creating an environment where engineers can do their best work.
The role offers significant ownership and flexibility within a fully remote, distributed engineering organization.
You will be responsible for the day-to-day leadership and development of the engineering team while introducing greater structure and consistency to how work is planned, communicated, and delivered.

- Mentor engineers on technical topics and support sound engineering practices.
- Help guide the migration from a legacy PHP codebase to a modern Ruby on Rails stack using Ruby 4 and Rails 8.
- Drive hiring activities and help build a strong, diverse engineering team.
- Contribute code occasionally when useful, while keeping people leadership and process management as the primary focus.
Requirements:
You should combine hands-on software engineering experience with demonstrated people leadership and the ability to manage distributed, diverse teams effectively. Experience with modern development practices and AI-assisted coding tools is also important.
- At least 1 year of direct people management experience.
- Experience managing fully or partially distributed engineering teams.
- Experience leading diverse teams across different locations and backgrounds.
- A software engineering background prior to moving into management, ideally with 3+ years of engineering experience.
- Ruby on Rails experience is preferred, though there is flexibility for candidates with strong engineering management backgrounds in other technologies.
- Strong communication, coaching, mentoring, and performance-management skills.
- Ability to facilitate architecture discussions, evaluate technical solutions, scope projects, and support engineering decisions.
- Comfort working with AI coding tools such as Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and Claude Code.
- Ability to understand, review, and critically assess AI-generated code while maintaining clear human ownership and accountability for production software.
- Familiarity with Ruby on Rails, Aurora MySQL, AWS, server-rendered HTML, and light JavaScript is beneficial.
Benefits:
- Salary of $170,000–$200,000 CAD.
- Fully remote position within Canada.
- Work within North American time zones, with most team members based in the Eastern time zone.
- No required core working hours, providing flexibility in how you structure your working day.
- Opportunity to lead a distributed team and make a significant impact on engineering processes and team development.
- Exposure to a major technology modernization initiative involving Ruby on Rails, AWS, and AI-assisted development tools.
