Street Outreach Coordinator

Job Location: Washington, DC and Prince George’s County, MD

Position Type: Exempt

Reports to: Assistant Program Manager, Street Outreach

Sasha Bruce Youthwork is the leading provider of homeless youth services in the DC region. Founded in1974, Sasha Bruce Youthwork (SBY) works to improve the lives of runaway, homeless, abused, and neglected youth and their families in the DC region. We achieve this by providing shelter, counseling, life skills training, and positive youth development activities to over 5,000 youth and their families each year. With 50 years of experience meeting the growing needs of DC’s youth and families with innovative programs, SBY is committed to ending youth homelessness.

About this Position

Sasha Bruce Youthwork seeks a motivated and compassionate individual to join our Street Outreach Program (SOP) as a Street Outreach Coordinator. In this role, you will directly engage with homeless and runaway youth in Washington, D.C. and Prince George's County, Maryland, providing essential resources, support, and guidance to help them access services and improve their well-being.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Implement street and community outreach activities according to the program's outreach plan, covering assigned routes and locations where homeless youth congregate.
  • Approach and engage youth through conversation, providing resources like survival aid kits, hygiene supplies, harm reduction materials, and information on available services.
  • Conduct initial screening, intake, and assessment to identify immediate needs, risk factors, trafficking indicators, and potential program eligibility.
  • Provide crisis counseling, safety planning, and conflict resolution support as needed.
  • Transport or refer youth to shelter, drop-in centers, and other services as desired, following warm hand-off protocols.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with local businesses, community centers, service providers, and partners to coordinate outreach efforts.
  • Accurately document all outreach activities, engagements, services provided, and data required for HMIS, other data trackers and other reporting. Completes client case records within 24-48 hours of the service; maintain accurate, complete, and confidential case files, written documentation, reports to track client progress and outcomes and all other necessary documentation;
  • Support other program activities like community events, and supply drives as assigned.
  • Maintain updated knowledge of local youth services, resources, and referral options.
  • Participate in regular team consultation meetings, staff meetings, trainings, conferences, regular supervision and community outreach events as required;
  • Complete all required trainings on an annual basis; including on outreach protocols, trauma- informed care, youth development, LGBTQ inclusivity, human trafficking, and other relevant topics.
  • Participate in clinical supervision with the Sasha Bruce Clinical Team;
  • Other duties as assigned by the Assistant Program Manager, Program Manager or the Chief of Programs or their designee.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, human services, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum 1-2 years of experience working with runaway, homeless, or other at-risk youth.
  • Bilingual fluency in English and Spanish is required.
  • Training/certification in areas like trauma-informed care, positive youth development, motivational interviewing, crisis intervention.
  • Strong active listening, rapport-building, and communication skills.
  • Able to exercise patience, creativity, and take a non-judgmental, harm reduction approach.
  • Knowledge of issues like human trafficking, sexual exploitation, mental health, substance abuse impacting homeless youth.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and client database/case management systems.
  • Must have a valid driver's license, clean driving record, and ability to work evenings/weekends.
  • Experience with homeless youth outreach and services in DC/Prince George's County a plus.

Additional Requirements

If an offer is extended, the candidate will be required to successfully complete a criminal background check and/or FBI fingerprinting, as well as other screening as applicable for the position or required by the funding agency. A valid driver’s license is also required. Additionally, this position requires schedule flexibility to include nights and some weekends. This role will include working in various weather conditions. Standing, walking around and lifting items such as toiletries, groceries and other related outreach supplies will also be necessary.
