Job Title: Facility Maintenance Shop Assistant
Department: Materials, Logistics, and Safety
Reports To: Facility Maintenance Manager
Facility Maintenance Shop Assistant Summary: The Facility Maintenance Shop Assistant supports the day-to-day operations of the maintenance shop by assisting skilled technicians and tradespeople with repair, preventive maintenance, and general upkeep of equipment, vehicles, facilities, and grounds. This role requires a hands-on, safety-conscious individual who thrives in a fast-paced environment and takes pride in keeping operations running smoothly.
Facility Maintenance Shop Assistant Duties and Responsibilities:
- General Shop Support:
- Assist maintenance technicians with equipment repairs, installations, and preventive maintenance tasks
- Perform basic maintenance duties, including lubrication, filter changes, fluid checks, and minor adjustments
- Retrieve tools, parts, and materials as directed by senior technicians
- Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the shop floor, work benches, and storage areas
- Dispose of waste materials, used fluids, and scrap parts in compliance with environmental regulations
- Inventory & Parts Management:
- Receive, sort, and stock incoming parts, supplies, and equipment
- Assist with conducting regular inventory counts and restocking supplies
- Track parts usage and report low-stock items to the supervisor
- Maintain accurate records of parts issued and returned
- Safety & Compliance:
- Follow all safety protocols, OSHA guidelines, and company policies at all times
- Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriate to the task
- Report unsafe conditions, equipment defects, or accidents immediately to the supervisor
- Assist with safety inspections and ensure tools and equipment are properly stored
- Facility & Grounds Maintenance:
- Perform yard maintenance duties, including mowing grass and trimming with a weed wacker, to keep grounds neat and presentable
- Safely set up and use ladders to access elevated areas for maintenance, inspections, and repairs
- Replace air filters in HVAC units on a scheduled basis and document service dates accordingly
- Apply pest control treatments to designated interior and exterior areas following safety guidelines and product instructions
- Monitor and report signs of pest activity or structural issues to the supervisor
- Vehicle & Equipment Cleaning:
- Wash, rinse, and dry company trucks and fleet vehicles to maintain a clean and professional appearance
- Clean vehicle interiors, including vacuuming, wiping surfaces, and removing debris
- Inspect vehicles during cleaning for visible damage or maintenance needs and report findings to the supervisor
- Keep washing equipment, hoses, and cleaning supplies properly stored and in good working order
- Documentation & Communication:
- Log completed maintenance tasks, work orders, and service records accurately
- Communicate job status updates to supervisors and team members as needed
- Assist in preparing work areas and staging materials before tasks begin

Facility Maintenance Shop Assistant Qualifications:
- Education & Experience:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent required
- Vocational or technical training in maintenance, mechanics, or a related trade is a plus
- 0–2 years of experience in a maintenance, shop, or trades environment preferred; entry-level candidates are encouraged to apply
- Skills & Abilities:
- Basic understanding of hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment
- Ability to read simple work orders, maintenance logs, and instruction manuals
- Strong work ethic with a reliable, team-oriented attitude
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions accurately
- Good organizational skills and attention to detail
- Basic computer skills for logging work orders (preferred, not required)

Facility Maintenance Shop Assistant Physical Demands and Work Environment:
- Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 lbs regularly.
- Ability to stand, kneel, bend, and work in confined spaces for extended periods.
- Comfortable climbing and working on ladders at varying heights in a safe manner.
- Ability to operate outdoor power equipment, including lawn mowers and weed wackers, for extended periods.
- Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, humidity, and direct sun.
- Ability to work in non-climate-controlled environments with exposure to extreme heat and cold temperatures for extended periods.
- Comfortable handling pest control chemicals with proper PPE; exposure to cleaning agents and solvents.
- Manual dexterity and physical stamina to perform repetitive tasks throughout the shift.
- Ability to work in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments, including the maintenance shop, facility grounds, parking areas, and building rooftops or elevated areas
- NOTE: Work areas are not climate-controlled, so employees must be comfortable working in extreme heat and cold temperatures for extended periods
- Regular exposure to grease, cleaning agents, pest control chemicals, engine noise, outdoor heat, and power equipment is expected
- Ability to wear proper PPE is required and provided for all applicable tasks
