Job Description

Biosecurity & AI Safety Fellowship

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Biosecurity & AI Safety Fellowship based in the United States.

This short-term fellowship offers an opportunity to apply advanced biological expertise to emerging challenges at the intersection of biology, biosecurity, and artificial intelligence.
You will review and assess biological and biotechnology-related content against established safety policies and guidelines.
The role requires strong scientific judgment, particularly when distinguishing legitimate research from potentially harmful or dual-use applications.
You will work on technically complex and sometimes ambiguous cases where biological nuance and careful risk assessment are essential.
Your contributions will help strengthen both automated monitoring systems and human-led review processes for biological safety.
The position provides exposure to frontier AI capabilities and risks in biology while offering the opportunity to collaborate with experienced researchers and experts.
This is a remote, project-based opportunity well suited to scientists who want to apply their expertise to emerging biosecurity and AI safety challenges.

Accountabilities:
  • Review and label biological and biotechnology-related content according to established safety policies, guidelines, and review frameworks.
  • Assess technically complex or ambiguous biological exchanges and make consistent, well-reasoned determinations about potential risks.
  • Distinguish legitimate scientific, educational, and research applications from information that could create biological misuse or dual-use concerns.
  • Apply subject-matter expertise across areas such as pathogen research, microbiology, virology, molecular biology, cancer biology, synthetic biology, biotechnology, genomics, and related disciplines.
  • Identify difficult or ambiguous cases and clearly document the scientific reasoning supporting review decisions.
  • Contribute to improving the consistency, accuracy, and quality of biological safety review processes.
  • Support the development and refinement of approaches used by automated monitoring systems and human reviewers to identify potentially harmful biological content.
  • Apply strong analytical judgment and attention to scientific nuance when evaluating emerging biological technologies and research concepts.
Requirements:
  • Strong academic or professional background in biology, microbiology, virology, molecular biology, cancer biology, biotechnology, synthetic biology, genomics, or a closely related scientific discipline.
  • Ability to understand technical biological research, terminology, methodologies, experimental concepts, and scientific literature.
  • Strong analytical reasoning and attention to detail, particularly when evaluating ambiguous or technically complex scenarios.
  • Ability to consistently interpret and apply written policies and guidelines to scientific situations that may not have straightforward answers.
  • Interest or professional experience in biosecurity, biosafety, biorisk, biodefense, dual-use biotechnology, biological threat assessment, or related areas.
  • Strong written communication skills and the ability to clearly explain scientific reasoning and risk determinations.
  • Relevant experience may come from government, national security, biodefense, academic research, or industry settings.
  • Particularly relevant scientific backgrounds include pathogen and infectious disease research, microbiology, virology, cancer biology, molecular biology, genomics, synthetic biology, and emerging biotechnology.
  • A PhD is not required; master's-level scientific training combined with relevant professional experience can also be highly valuable.
  • Ability to commit to approximately 20–40 hours per week during the project period, with a minimum expected commitment of approximately 25 hours per week.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
Benefits:
  • Compensation: $80–$120 per hour, depending on experience.
  • Duration: Approximately 4–8 weeks.
  • Commitment: 20–40 hours per week.
  • Location: Remote within the United States.
  • Employment type: Short-term contract.
  • Opportunity to apply specialized biological expertise to emerging challenges in AI safety, biotechnology, and biosecurity.
  • Exposure to frontier AI capabilities and potential risks related to biology.
  • Opportunity to collaborate with and learn from leading researchers and experts working at the intersection of science, technology, and safety.
  • Opportunity to contribute to the development of approaches that help identify and mitigate biological safety risks while preserving legitimate scientific use cases.
