Job Description
Under the general direction of the Special Operations Division Chief and the direct supervision of the Training Captain during orientations and academies, the Training & Recruitment Coordinator coordinates, implements, and delivers entry-level and lateral-hire District training programs and activities. The Training Coordinator evaluates the effectiveness of these programs to ensure proficiency in applying firefighting techniques and procedures. The Recruitment & Training Coordinator supervises and evaluates recruits during orientation programs and/or fire academy training.
The Recruitment & Training Coordinator serves as the district’s recruitment coordinator, ensuring that local individuals and groups can learn about firefighting careers and the overall hiring process within the Eagle River Fire Protection District. The Recruitment & Training Coordinator regularly organizes and facilitates ERFPD career information sessions and participates in community events throughout the district and surrounding communities. The Recruitment & Training Coordinator also collaborates with local and regional school districts and colleges to develop strategies to attract highly qualified applicants.
The position follows a semi-flexible 40-hour workweek, with the schedule coordinated with the Special Operations Division Chief. Limited remote work is permitted when appropriate and approved by the Special Operations Division Chief.

- Under the general supervision of the Special Operations Division Chief and the direct supervision of the Training Captain, the Recruitment & Training Coordinator will coordinate and deliver Fire District and fire academy orientation programs.
- Enter and maintain appropriate new hire training records.
- Assist the hiring group in the planning and coordination of ERFPD’s hiring process for entry-level recruits and lateral recruits.
- Continually monitor and assist recruits’ advancement through the application and hiring process.
- Routinely coordinate and host ERFPD career information sessions.
- Routinely and regularly participate in community events held throughout the district and neighboring communities to recruit entry-level and lateral firefighter candidates.
- Works with local high schools and colleges to develop strategies to reach quality entry-level candidates.
- Participates in the District’s retention efforts.
- Assists with maintaining District facilities and equipment. Assists with the maintenance and upkeep of the training grounds, facilities, and equipment.
- Working knowledge of Emergency Medical Services. Knowledge of emergency care practices and procedures, including EMS incident management practices.
- EMS Program Management, including but not limited to continued education and certification renewals.
- Obtains and maintains a sound knowledge of both Districts’ geography and target hazards.
- Establishes and maintains positive, effective working relationships with other employees, District officials, and other emergency service providers in the area.
- Consistently demonstrates professionalism, courtesy, and competency as a representative of the Eagle River Fire Protection District.
- Identifies opportunities for improving work methods and procedures.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Works both collaboratively as part of a team and independently when necessary.
- Operates power tools to construct training props.
- The Training Coordinator may occasionally respond to emergency scenes as a Firefighter, Driver/Operator, or Company Officer as qualified.
- Engages in continuous professional growth by attending internal and external training sessions and departmental exercises.
- Takes on roles such as a project or program team member or coordinator when assigned.
- Leads, motivates, trains, coordinates, and delegates as appropriate.
- Encourages participants to engage in and uphold a positive training culture.

Note: All Fire, Hazardous Material, and Driver Operator Certifications, if not issued by the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention & Control, must have an IFSAC and/or Pro-Board seal and the ability to obtain an equivalent recognition certificate from the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention & Control.
- 3 years of experience in combination or career system
- Colorado Driver’s License*
- Must possess a High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Hazardous Materials Awareness / Operations meeting or exceeding the requirements of NFPA 470, 2022 edition
- Firefighter II Certification meeting or exceeding the requirements of NFPA 1010, 2024 edition
- Fire Instructor I Certification meeting or exceeding the requirements of NFPA 1041, 2019 edition
- Driver/Operator Certification meeting or exceeding the requirements of NFPA 1010, 2024 edition*
- State of Colorado EMT – Basic or NREMT with the ability to obtain State of Colorado Certification
- Current NWCG Incident Qualification Card (minimum of Firefighter Type 2)*
- Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) (external candidates only)
Preferred Qualifications

- Fire Officer I Certification meeting or exceeding the requirements of NFPA 1021, 2020 edition

Wearing a personal protective ensemble and an SCBA, performing firefighting tasks (hose line operations, extensive crawling, lifting and carrying heavy objects, ventilating roofs or walls using power or hand tools, forcible entry, etc.), rescue operations, and other emergency response actions under stressful conditions, including working in extremely hot or cold environments for extended periods.
- Wearing an SCBA, including a demand-valve–type positive-pressure facepiece or HEPA-filter mask, requires the ability to tolerate increased respiratory workloads.
- Exposure to toxic fumes, irritants, particulates, biological (infectious) and nonbiological hazards, and/or heated gases, despite the use of personal protective ensembles and SCBA.
- Climbing six or more flights of stairs while wearing a fire protective ensemble weighing at least 50 lb. and carrying equipment/tools weighing an additional 20 to 40 lb.
- Wearing an encapsulating, insulated fire-protective ensemble will result in significant fluid loss, which frequently progresses to clinical dehydration and can elevate core temperature to levels exceeding 102.2°F.
- Wearing a personal protective ensemble and SCBA, searching, finding, and rescue dragging or carrying victims ranging from newborns to adults weighing over 200 lb. to safety despite hazardous conditions and low visibility. Firefighter.
- Wearing a personal protective ensemble and SCBA, advancing water-filled hoselines up to 21/2 in. in diameter from fire apparatus to occupancy [approximately 150ft.], which can involve negotiating multiple flights of stairs, ladders, and other obstacles.
- Wearing personal protective ensemble and SCBA, climbing ladders, operating from heights, walking or crawling in the dark along narrow and uneven surfaces, and operating in proximity to electrical power lines and/or other hazards.
- Unpredictable emergency requirements for prolonged periods of extreme physical exertion without the benefit of warm-up, scheduled rest periods, meals, access to medication(s), or hydration.
- Operating fire apparatus or other vehicles in emergency mode with emergency lights and sirens.
- Critical, time-sensitive, complex problem solving during physical exertion in stressful, hazardous environments, including hot, dark, tightly enclosed spaces, that is further aggravated by fatigue, flashing lights, sirens, and other distractions.
- Ability to communicate (give and comprehend verbal orders) while wearing personal protective ensembles and SCBA under conditions of high background noise, poor visibility, and drenching from hose lines and/or fixed protection systems (sprinklers).
- Functioning as an integral component of a team, where sudden incapacitation of a member can result in mission failure or in risk of injury or death to civilians or other team members.
- Operates computer equipment, phones, and other office equipment as necessary; completes reports.
- Possesses and maintains the minimum required certifications and training as listed below.
- Communicates with voice over two-way radio. Communicates by voice to members of the community and the team. Gives verbal presentations to live audiences ranging from children to adults.
- Possesses the ability to remain calm in life-threatening or other critical situations.
