About the Role:
The Shop Technician plays a critical role in maintaining and repairing heavy machinery and equipment used in the mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction industries. This position ensures that all mechanical systems operate efficiently and safely to minimize downtime and maximize productivity. The technician will diagnose mechanical issues, perform routine maintenance, and execute complex repairs on a variety of equipment including engines, hydraulic systems, and electrical components. Working closely with operations and safety teams, the Shop Technician contributes to a safe working environment by adhering to industry standards and company protocols. Ultimately, this role supports the continuous operation of extraction activities by ensuring equipment reliability and longevity.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of a recognized technical or vocational training program in mechanical or industrial maintenance.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience working as a technician in heavy equipment maintenance, preferably in mining, quarrying, or oil and gas sectors.
- Strong understanding of mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems used in heavy machinery.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and blueprints.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certification in heavy equipment repair or industrial maintenance (e.g., ASE, NATEF, or equivalent).
- Experience with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
- Familiarity with safety standards and regulations specific to mining and oil and gas industries.
- Welding and fabrication skills.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to operate heavy machinery.
Responsibilities:
- Perform diagnostic tests and inspections on mining and extraction equipment to identify mechanical faults.
- Conduct routine maintenance tasks such as lubrication, adjustments, and parts replacement to prevent equipment failure.
- Repair or replace defective components including engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, and electrical wiring.
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance and repair work performed, including parts used and time spent.
- Collaborate with safety officers to ensure all repairs comply with safety regulations and company policies.
- Order and manage inventory of spare parts and tools necessary for repair and maintenance activities.
- Assist in training junior technicians and apprentices to develop their technical skills and knowledge.

The Shop Technician utilizes mechanical and diagnostic skills daily to troubleshoot and repair complex equipment issues, ensuring operational efficiency. Proficiency in reading technical manuals and schematics allows the technician to accurately identify problems and implement effective solutions.
