Job Description
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Principal Software Engineer, Platform (DevEx) based in United States.
This is a high-impact Principal Engineer opportunity within a lean, highly autonomous Developer Experience team.
You’ll shape AI-native platform infrastructure designed to help engineering teams build and operate at unprecedented speed.
The role spans agent orchestration, coding-agent runtimes, developer environments, build systems, CI/CD, and platform guardrails.
Your architectural decisions will establish patterns that other engineering teams can adopt across the organization.
You’ll operate with a long-term technical horizon, anticipating platform needs and solving complex problems before they become organizational blockers.
The environment values deep technical expertise, independent decision-making, experimentation, and a strong bias toward practical delivery.
You’ll also mentor senior engineers and help define the future of AI-assisted software development at enterprise scale.
- Define technical strategy and architecture for AI-native developer tooling, including agent orchestration layers, coding-agent harnesses, LLM reasoning loops, and agent runtimes.
- Design and deliver scalable Developer Experience platform capabilities spanning development environments, build systems, CI/CD, developer portals, velocity tooling, guardrails, and compliance.
- Lead complex projects autonomously from comprehensive system design through implementation and production delivery, partnering with engineering teams across the organization.
- Act as a technical authority on coding-agent infrastructure and agent-runtime architecture, providing guidance and removing engineering barriers that affect multiple teams.
- Anticipate technology and platform needs over a 1–3 year horizon and translate those needs into actionable technical roadmaps and milestones.
- Establish engineering patterns, reference implementations, orchestration approaches, and safety standards that other teams can confidently adopt.
- Design and implement security and compliance mechanisms for autonomous and semi-autonomous coding agents, including RBAC, secrets management, and safety controls.
- Identify opportunities where Developer Experience expertise can improve engineering productivity across the broader R&D organization.
- Mentor Staff-level and emerging senior engineers, raising technical standards through design reviews, hands-on guidance, and technical leadership.
- Contribute to the wider engineering community through thought leadership, technical writing, conference participation, or other channels where appropriate.
- 15–20+ years of software engineering experience, including recent hands-on experience building coding-agent runtime infrastructure such as agent orchestration, harnesses, or LLM reasoning loops.
- Demonstrated Principal-level technical scope, with a history of making architectural decisions and building platforms or systems adopted by multiple teams or organizations.
- Deep production experience with build systems, CI/CD, internal developer platforms, or related infrastructure operating at significant scale.
- Recent practical experience with coding agents as part of engineering workflows; experience limited to process automation or AI-assisted code review does not meet the core requirement.
- Strong systems-design expertise and the ability to understand complex technical ecosystems, anticipate future challenges, and establish solutions with a multi-year horizon.
- Proven ability to operate independently in a small, high-trust environment, defining technical direction and execution plans with minimal oversight.
- Strong understanding of security and environment-safety principles, particularly RBAC, secrets management, compliance controls, and guardrails for autonomous or semi-autonomous agents.
- Ability to influence technical direction beyond your immediate team and build alignment across engineering organizations.
- Strong communication, technical leadership, mentoring, and problem-solving skills.
- Preferred: Experience working in organizations where coding agents are already central to daily engineering workflows rather than limited to experimentation or pilots.
- Preferred: Experience influencing engineering practices at organizational scale or representing technical direction through conference talks, technical writing, blogs, or similar channels.
- Competitive compensation: Base salary range of $263,800–$395,600 for Zone 1 locations (CA, CT, DC, MD, MA, NJ, NY, VA, WA) and $246,500–$369,700 for other U.S. locations.
- Additional compensation: Annual bonus, equity, and a comprehensive total rewards package.
- Remote flexibility: U.S.-remote work environment with support for autonomous working styles and flexible time off.
- Health coverage: Company-paid medical, dental, and vision benefits, including options with 100% employer-paid employee coverage and 90% dependent coverage.
- Financial benefits: 401(k) matching, FSA and HSA options, financial planning resources, and other financial wellness support.
- Wellness support: Telehealth services, including access to One Medical memberships.
- Family benefits: Parental leave, maternity support, fertility services of up to $20,000, and surrogacy and adoption reimbursement.
- Additional lifestyle benefits: Pet insurance, legal advisory services, breast milk shipping support, and other programs designed to support employees through different stages of life.
- Career development: Comprehensive onboarding, leadership development, learning opportunities, and programs designed to support continued professional growth.
- Recognition: Peer recognition and rewards programs, including Bonusly and peer-nominated awards.
- Inclusive culture: A workplace that values diverse perspectives, individuality, collaboration, and equitable opportunities.
