POSITION SUMMARY
The Training and Safety Manager is responsible for promoting safe work practices at the specified site and for overseeing the entirety of training (classroom, on-the-job, train the trainer, etc.), with emphasis on the employee’s first 90 days and the onboarding process. The Training and Safety Manager ensures compliance with OSHA and other applicable regulations, trains employees on the use of material handling equipment and standard operating procedures, and uses observations, data, and analytics to identify opportunities to improve safety, productivity, and retention.
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- In conjunction with leadership teams, creates, implements, and drives the site safety program and standard onboarding/follow-up and annual training certification programs.
- Conduct unannounced compliance inspections of the jobsite using applicable OSHA Standards, International Fire Code, and local safety regulations/policies.
- Identify and/or train others to identify safety and health hazards and violations.
- Identify and recommend reasonable and feasible means of abatement of identified hazards and potential violations.
- Use camera equipment to document inspection findings as appropriate.
- Investigate industrial accidents or near-misses to determine the root cause(s) and use findings to develop policies, corrective actions, and retraining to prevent future occurrences.
- Responsible for properly and accurately maintaining OSHA logs.
- Assist Human Resources and employees with Workers’ Compensation claims as needed.
- Conducts day-to-day training and certification on Powered Industrial Trucks, equipment, work instructions, and new hire orientation.
- Responsible for ensuring proper licensing of onsite forklift/powered industrial truck operators.
- Conduct annually required safety and compliance training.
- Identifies and assesses current and future training needs using observations, data, and analytics.
- Designs overall or individualized training and development plans that address needs and expectations.
- Researches, writes, and creates new training materials, standard operating procedures, and written reports based on facility needs.
- Deploys a wide variety of training methods and provides employees with opportunities for ongoing development.
- Organizes and schedules training sessions.
- Documents, tracks, and files training and certification records for each employee.
- Monitors and evaluates training program(s) effectiveness and identifies opportunities for retraining.
- Monitors and reports out on key safety and training initiatives within network and to the executive team, including KPIs, ROI, and roadmap execution.
- Leverage observations, incident and data trends, and ROI analyses to drive continuous improvement in safety performance and training platforms.
- Manage multiple initiatives concurrently to deliver employee performance improvement, knowledge retention, and create processes/programs to scale in conjunction with facility growth.
- Coordinate safety activities within the facility.
- Keep abreast of new safety related technologies, standards, codes, rules, and regulations, as well as training trends and best practices.
- Participate in relevant meetings and represent the Company when necessary.
- Responsible for carrying out other assigned safety, health, and training duties as necessary to ensure a safe working environment.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of and thorough understanding of OSHA Standards; such as fall protection, forklift, lockout-tagout, LP gas storage, machine guarding, bloodborne pathogens, etc.
- Knowledge of other regulations and guidelines, such as: National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Uniform Building Codes (UBC), Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), National Electrical Codes (NEC), and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
- Ability to demonstrate advanced knowledge and application of federal, state, and local occupational safety and health laws and regulations.
- Track record in designing and executing successful training programs.
- Familiarity with traditional and modern training methods (mentoring, coaching, on-the-job or in classroom training, e-learning, workshops, simulations, etc.).
- Skill in presentation of safety training programs; comfortable presenting to large groups, answering questions, and leading discussions.
- Technical and mechanical aptitude for material handling equipment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication and leadership skills.
- Strong writing and record keeping ability for reports, training manuals, and safety documentation.
- Strong computer and database skills, including Microsoft Office applications.
- Skill in effective interpersonal skills, negotiation, time management, organization, and customer service.
- Understanding of key financial, customer service, and supply chain metrics.
- Ability to demonstrate analytical problem solving skills, through a systematic approach by identifying the problem, developing a course of action, implementing an action to affect a solution, and measuring the effectiveness of the action taken.
- Ability to influence key stakeholders on tactical and strategic objectives.
- Demonstrated track record of successfully managing implementation projects from start to finish.
- Ability to operate effectively in a manufacturing plant or warehouse environment and with senior company leadership.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and to be flexible and adaptable to new ideas, changing priorities, and deadlines.
- Ability to travel, including overnight travel on occasion.
- Ability to follow policies, procedures, and regulations.

- Experience with organizational change/transformation is a strong plus.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in occupational safety and health, safety engineering, or related field preferred; an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Minimum of five (5) years of safety/EHS experience in a warehouse, distribution, logistics, or manufacturing environment, which includes primary responsibility in four (4) of the following areas: hazard identification, hazard evaluation, hazard control design, safety/health program design, and safety/health program evaluation.
- Two (2) or more years of experience leading or implementing training, onboarding, or leadership development programs.
- Authorized OSHA General Industry 10 & 30 hour trainer.
- Authorized Red Cross or National Safety Council First Aid/CPR Instructor.
- Forklift trainer certification.
- Experience with ISO 14001, loss prevention, etc. a plus.
- Valid driver’s license.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed in varied working conditions between controlled and uncontrolled environments. Moderate walking, standing, and/or climbing; heavy lifting and carrying, stooping, bending, kneeling, and reaching. Work outside and inside; work around machinery with moving parts; work around moving objects or vehicles; exposure to dampness and humidity; exposure to slippery and uneven surfaces; exposure to heat, cold, and inclement weather. May involve moderate exposure to potentially dangerous materials or situations, such as extreme heights, temperatures, dust, fumes, vapors, solvents and chemicals, and loud noises. Use of personal protective equipment required. In addition, work may be performed inside in an office environment with moderate lighting and temperature. Work is performed using computer equipment. Work may be performed alone, with others, around others, and with verbal and face-to-face contact. Work may include extended days. Minimal travel required and may vary based on the requirements of the business.
