Job Overview:
The Director of Engineering provides strategic and operational leadership for the organization's engineering function. This position is responsible for overseeing manufacturing engineering, process engineering, product engineering support, capital projects, automation initiatives, maintenance engineering, and continuous improvement efforts. The Director develops engineering strategies that improve safety, quality, productivity, reliability, and profitability while supporting the company's long-term business objectives.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Advises management in developing processes, policies, and procedures.
- Implements effective engineering methods and provides technical guidance and acts as a resource for engineers.
- Ensures components, materials, and tools are used to capacity.
- Develop and execute the organization's engineering strategy in alignment with business objectives.
- Lead engineering teams across one or more manufacturing facilities.
- Establish engineering standards, best practices, and technical governance.
- Prioritize engineering resources to support production, customer requirements, and strategic initiatives.
- Drive innovation through new technologies, automation, and process improvements.
- Improve manufacturing processes to increase efficiency, quality, and throughput.
- Lead process optimization and waste reduction initiatives.
- Support new product launches and manufacturing readiness.
- Ensure manufacturing equipment and production systems meet operational requirements.
- Collaborate with Operations to resolve production challenges and improve plant performance.
- Develop and manage capital expenditure plans.
- Lead facility expansions, equipment installations, and modernization projects.
- Manage project budgets, schedules, contractors, and engineering resources.
- Ensure projects are completed safely, on time, and within budget.
- Champion Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and Operational Excellence initiatives.
- Establish KPIs to measure engineering effectiveness.
- Identify opportunities to improve Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), reliability, and manufacturing capability.
- Utilize data-driven decision-making to improve operational performance.
- Recruit, mentor, and develop engineering professionals and leaders.
- Build succession plans and support employee development.
- Conduct performance evaluations and establish development plans.
- Foster collaboration, innovation, and accountability throughout the engineering organization.
- Partner with Operations, Finance, Sales, and Business Development to achieve business objectives.
- Support strategic planning, capacity planning, and long-range operational improvements.
- Serve as the technical advisor to executive leadership.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Demonstrated experience leading capital projects and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Strong financial acumen with experience managing capital and operating budgets.
- Excellent leadership, communication, project management, and problem-solving skills.
- Multi-site manufacturing experience.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Industrial, Manufacturing, or related Engineering discipline (Master's degree preferred).
- Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred but not required.
- 10+ years of progressive engineering leadership experience in manufacturing.
- 5+ years managing engineering teams or large-scale projects.
