Exercise Physiologist – RWJBarnabas Health

Our Exercise Physiologists work collaboratively with physicians, patients, families, physical therapists, schools, and community partners to support safe recovery, promote wellness, and deliver high-quality sports medicine and health assessment services. Through clinical assessment, patient education, exercise programming, concussion management support, cardiac screening, and community outreach, our Exercise Physiologists help patients and athletes achieve their health and performance goals. As an Exercise Physiologist, a typical day might include the following:

• Assisting the Medical Director and physician subspecialists with the clinical management of patients experiencing post-concussion symptoms.
• Educating and navigating patients through acute and subacute post-concussion care, including follow-up communication and coordination with referring physician practices and medically managed schools.
• Educating patients and families on Return-to-Learn and Return-to-Play protocols and supporting safe progression and clearance under physician guidance.
• Monitoring and updating academic restrictions and home exercise programs based on patient symptom logs and clinical recommendations.
• Administering baseline and comprehensive post-concussion assessments, including ImPACT testing, as well as cardiac screening assessments for individuals and institutions.
• Assisting physical therapists with exercise programming and Return-to-Play progression as needed.
• Coordinating referrals and navigating patients to rehabilitation and ancillary sports medicine services within the outpatient setting.
• Assisting with patient scheduling and navigating patients through appointments and related ancillary services.
• Leading and supporting on-site and off-site screenings and community events by monitoring workflow, troubleshooting systems, coordinating staff resources, and collaborating with school and hospital-based partners.
• Supporting education, promotion, and marketing efforts for health screenings and sports medicine services, including the Matthew J. Morahan III Health Assessment Center for Athletes.
• Building and maintaining strong relationships with physician practices, schools, institutions, patients, families, and community partners.
• Assisting with the training of per diem, part-time, and full-time staff on office processes, procedures, and program standards.
• Assisting with data gathering for case reviews, research initiatives, and performance improvement projects while supporting continuous quality improvement across department programs and services.

To Be Considered:

To be considered for this opportunity, you must meet the following criteria:

• Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Exercise Physiology, Athletic Training, a health-related field, or a related discipline.
• Certification: BLS Provider CPR certification required.
• Experience: Previous experience in exercise physiology, athletic training, sports medicine, concussion management, cardiac screening, patient navigation, or a related healthcare setting is preferred.
• Skills: Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with physicians, patients, families, healthcare professionals, schools, and community organizations.
• Technical Skills: Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; ability to learn and effectively utilize clinical testing, scheduling, and electronic documentation systems.
• Clinical Knowledge: Knowledge of exercise programming, post-concussion care, Return-to-Learn and Return-to-Play protocols, patient education, screening assessments, and interdisciplinary care is preferred.
• Schedule Requirements: Ability to work a flexible per diem schedule.
