DoDAF Data Architect – Business Mission Area

Position: DoDAF Data Architect

Location: Remote
Focus Area: Business Mission Area (BMA)

Position Overview

The BMA Data Architect serves as the primary technical authority for designing, modeling, and unifying enterprise business data across the Department of War (DoW). In this role, you will align disparate Defense Business Systems (DBS) with the DoD Business Enterprise Architecture (BEA) to drive data-driven portfolio management and business transformation.

By utilizing the Department of Defense Architecture Framework (DoDAF), you will ensure that the business systems driving logistics, finance, human resources, and acquisition are fully interoperable, audit-ready, and optimized to cost-effectively support the warfighter.

The primary mission of this architect is to ensure that “data means the same thing” across logistics, finance, and personnel systems (semantic interoperability). You will work closely with functional business process owners, rather than designing models strictly from technical documentation.

What You’ll Do

  • BEA Alignment: Lead the alignment of component-level business architectures with the enterprise-level DoD Business Enterprise Architecture (BEA).
  • DBS Data Modeling: Develop conceptual, logical, and physical data models for Defense Business Systems (DBS) to ensure seamless data exchanges.
  • DoDAF Viewpoint Development: Create DoDAF 2.0 artifacts (such as DIV-1, DIV-2, DIV-3, OV-5a, and SV-8) specifically tailored to map business processes and information flows.
  • Portfolio Interoperability: Design data integration standards that unify data across different Functional Area Managers (FAMs) like finance, procurement, and logistics.
  • Audit & Compliance Support: Architect data structures that support Financial Improvement and Audit Remediation (FIAR) compliance and Federal Enterprise Architecture (FEA) standards.
  • ERP Cloud Migration: Define the target data architecture and migration pathways for shifting heritage Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) databases to secure cloud environments.

Required Skills & Qualifications

Enterprise Architecture

  • Knowledge of the DoD Business Enterprise Architecture (BEA), Federated Architectures, and the Federal Enterprise Architecture Framework (FEAF).

DoDAF & Modeling Tools

  • Experience building DoDAF data views using enterprise modeling software (e.g., ARIS, System Architect, UML).

ERP Data Management

  • Experience with data schemas for large-scale federal ERP suites (such as SAP S/4HANA or Oracle EBS).

Data Governance & MDM

  • Experience in Master Data Management (MDM), business glossaries, data lineage, and establishing metadata repositories.

Compliance & Reporting

  • Familiarity with DoD financial systems, FIAR requirements, and data-driven portfolio management platforms (e.g., Advana/Vantage).

Ideal Candidate

This position is well suited for an experienced DoDAF, Enterprise Architecture, or Data Architecture professional who understands how business processes, enterprise data, Defense Business Systems, and DoD architecture fit together.

The successful candidate will be comfortable working across technical and functional organizations and translating complex business processes and data requirements into enterprise architecture products that support interoperability, modernization, compliance, and portfolio-level decision making.
