Position Overview

The Operations Analytics Intern works alongside the Operations team to analyze business and operational processes, identify opportunities for improvement, and develop data-driven recommendations that support more efficient field and office operations. This position provides hands-on experience applying analytics, problem-solving, and process improvement concepts within the cement and aggregates industry.

The intern will have opportunities to work with operational data, conduct field studies, develop and improve analytical tools, and present findings and recommendations to operations leaders. This internship is ideal for a student interested in using data and analytics to solve real-world operational challenges and understand how decisions impact productivity, efficiency, and business performance.

What You'll Do

  • Support analytical projects designed to evaluate site operations, business processes, and operational performance.
  • Collect, organize, and analyze operational data to identify trends, opportunities, and areas for improvement.
  • Conduct field operations studies to better understand processes, workflows, equipment utilization, and operational practices.
  • Spend time at operating locations observing processes and gathering information to support analysis.
  • Evaluate existing field and office practices and identify opportunities to improve efficiency or streamline processes.
  • Develop recommendations for procedures, processes, or tools that could improve field and office operations.
  • Build, maintain, and improve analytical tools used throughout the Company, primarily using Microsoft Excel.
  • Assist with developing reports, dashboards, and other tools that help translate operational data into useful information.
  • Support basic economic analysis and project justification for potential operational improvements.
  • Conduct research and gather information to support operational projects and business decisions.
  • Work with Operations team members to understand business challenges and determine what information or analysis may help support decision-making.
  • Summarize analytical findings and translate data into clear, practical recommendations.
  • Prepare and present analyses, findings, and recommendations to members of the Operations team.
  • Ask questions, challenge existing processes appropriately, and contribute new ideas to operational problem-solving and continuous improvement.
  • Follow all Company and site safety policies, rules, and procedures, as well as applicable MSHA regulations when working at operational locations.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Excel and working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Outlook.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with an interest in using data to understand and improve business operations.
  • Foundational understanding of economics, cost-benefit concepts, and project justification.
  • Ability to collect, organize, analyze, and interpret data.
  • Ability to translate analytical findings into clear and practical recommendations.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, high-quality work.
  • Strong organizational, planning, and time management skills.
  • Ability to conduct research and complete assigned projects with appropriate independence.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate analytical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to take initiative and manage assigned responsibilities.
  • Willingness to ask questions, propose new ideas, and participate in innovative problem-solving.

Education & Experience

  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor's degree program in Engineering Management, Industrial Engineering, Operations Research, Data Analytics, Business Analytics, Mathematics, or a related analytical, engineering, or quantitative field.
  • Coursework or experience involving data analysis, statistics, process improvement, operations, economics, or business analytics is preferred.
  • Previous internship, project, or work experience involving analytics, operations, manufacturing, or industrial environments is helpful but not required.

Other Qualifications

  • Basic exposure to data visualization tools such as Power BI or Tableau is preferred.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and an interest in understanding industrial equipment and processes.
  • Interest in operations, continuous improvement, process optimization, data analytics, or the construction materials industry.
  • Ability and willingness to spend time in both professional office and active field environments.
  • Willingness to visit cement and aggregate operations to observe processes and conduct field studies.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) when visiting operational areas.
  • Commitment to following all Company safety policies, procedures, and applicable MSHA regulations.
