Registered Nurse (RN)-Outpatient Surgery

Strong Med/Surg background required. Standby/callback rotation to Saturday call. Hours are 10am - 6:30 pm, M-F. Flexibility required in hours.
Description
Outpatient Surgery (OPS) focuses on pre-operative assessment and preparation of the surgical/procedural patient. Adult and pediatric patients of all ages and acuities for many different types of surgery are prepared in OPS on the day of admission for surgical procedures that may require the use of anesthetic agents. Phase II post-operative care and observation are provided in OPS as well. Patients/families receive comprehensive post-operative home care instructions and teaching prior to being discharged to home care. OPS nurses are team-oriented and have been successful in putting into place patient care that has been widely praised by patients, families, visitors, and regulatory agencies. They collaborate with anesthesiologists, surgeons, internists, and other services as needed to provide the most current evidence-based care to each individual patient who accesses the services provided by OPS.

ORIENTATION
- UMC General Hospital Orientation
- UMC General Nursing Orientation
- Electronic Documentation training.
Individualized Unit Specific Orientation
- Unit specific orientation is in addition to UMC’s General Hospital Orientation and General Nursing Orientation
- Orientation consists of observation, classroom, and clinical hours over a 6-8 week period.
- Classroom orientation takes place over approximately 1 week.
- During clinical orientation you will be paired with an experienced nurse preceptor. The preceptor is chosen to best fit your personality and learning style.
- Unique training includes patient assessment documentation and care of the perianesthesia patient.
- Clinical orientation will be conducted on days during regular business hours.
- Professional growth and development opportunities are available and encouraged including: committee participation, educational, and leadership advancement. Committees are available at unit level as well as hospital wide.
- Other opportunities include: mentoring and a mix of core and flexible scheduling to optimize staffing and balance for our employees.
Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing
- Valid Texas Graduate Nurse Permit required.
- Current CPR certification from American Heart Association.
- Customer service abilities including effective listening skills.
- Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, organizational skills, and the ability to work in a fast paced environment.
- Ability to perform work that requires walking, sitting and standing most of the time while on duty. Occasional lifting or patients with assistance may be required.
